Those who sweat while sleeping soundly are said to have *Dao Han* (Gibbering Sweat / Night Sweats). It is also known as "Yi Qin Han" (Sweat during one sleep). Those who sweat regardless of whether they are sitting or lying down are said to have *Zi Han* (Spontaneous Sweat). Spontaneous sweats caused by wind-cold, summerheat, cold-dampness, or phlegm-cough are recorded in their respective sections. Cases where there is no disease but constant spontaneous sweating, or excessive sweating after an illness, all belong to *Biao Xu* (Deficiency of the Exterior), due to unstable Stomach Qi and leakage of Ying Blood (Nutritive Blood). Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (Astragalus Decoction for Building the Middle) with a little Fumai (Floating Wheat) added for decoction is suitable. Alternatively, Huangqi Liuyin San (Astragalus Six-to-One Powder) may be decocted, or Yupingfeng San (Jade Windscreen Powder) may be taken. If the body temperature is normal but the sweat feels cold, or if the body is cold and the sweat is also cold, with no other diseases, these all belong to this syndrome.
For cases of spontaneous cold sweat accompanied by phlegm syndromes, Qi Qi Tang (Seven-Qi Decoction) is suitable. This formula is already recorded under Shen Ni San (Kidney Rebellious Qi Powder) on page 249. For spontaneous sweat that does not stop due to stagnant Qi, it is necessary to regulate Qi to harmonize Ying and Wei (Defensive) energies. Xiao Jianzhong Tang (Minor Decoction for Building the Middle) with Muxiang (Aucklandia Root) added is appropriate.
For excessive sweating after an illness, if Zhengyuan Yin (Upright Origin Decoction) and other heavy tonifying agents fail, Bazhen San (Eight-Treasure Powder) is suitable. In cases where there is no sweat elsewhere on the body, but only a patch of sweat at the Xin Kong (Heart Orifice / Sternum area), and sweating increases with excessive mental exertion, the pathology lies in overuse of the mind. It is suitable to nourish Heart Blood. Medication should follow a single principle, using Aitang (Mugwort Decoction) to mix and administer Fuling Mo (Poria Powder), named "Xin Han" (Heart Sweat). Qing Sang Di Er Ye (the second leaf of Green Mulberry) dried by roasting and ground into powder, taken with Mi Yin Tang (Rice Drink) on an empty stomach, is most effective for treating night sweats.
For Yin Han (sweating in the genital area), mixing Mituoseng (Lead Monoxide) and Shechuangzi (Cnidium Fruit) into a powder and dusting it on the area will stop it immediately.
If sweating persists despite medication, add Shu Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root, skin left on) to Xiao Jianzhong Tang. Alternatively, use Zhengyuan Yin, and simultaneously apply Wen Fen (Warm Powder) to the body. For profuse sweating that does not stop, add one part Musli Fen (Oyster Shell Powder) to various medicines, and swallow Zhusha Dan (Cinnabar Pill) or Rongzhu Dan (Velvet Cinnabar Pill).
For chronic spontaneous sweating lasting years, Heixi Dan (Black Tin Pill) is frequently used. It can also be used for sweating after prolonged illness or shortly after recovery from severe illness. If hot tonification is unsuitable, Yin and Yang must be made to interact and support each other, leading to natural recovery; Lingsha Dan (Alchemical Mercury Pill) should be the primary treatment. All the above methods are designed specifically to stop sweating without addressing other diseases, and do not apply to cases with concurrent pathologies.
If taking various medicines to stop sweating and consolidate the exterior and interior yields no effect, and hotter medicines cause even more uncontrolled sweating, one should only regulate Heart Blood. Since sweat is the fluid of the Heart, if the Heart lacks nourishment and cannot control blood, it overflows as sweat. Dahuang Tang (Rhubarb Decoction) with Chao Suanzaoren (Stir-fried Sour Jujube Seed) added is suitable. For those with slight heat, add Chao Shihu (Stir-fried Dendrobium Stem), and concurrently administer Lingsha Dan.
Sweat that is sticky like glue, coagulating like beads, or pouring down like rain, too fast to wipe away, is difficult to treat. Profuse sweating in Lou Feng (Leaking Wind) comes from the Zhong Men (Central Gate) syndrome in Stroke Syndromes.
For cases where excessive sweating leads to deficient heat, one should not stick strictly to clearing heat; instead, astringent formulas are suitable. For sweating accompanied by pathogenic heat, if the patient is not thirsty, Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) with Ban Qian (Half a Qian) of Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) added is best.
To treat Heart deficiency causing excessive sweating and insomnia: Take one pig heart, cut open keeping the blood, insert Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) two liang and Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) two liang into the heart, boil until cooked. Remove the herbs, and eat only the pig heart. Within three to four days, the illness will heal.
