1. Medical classics are as vast as the sea and sky; to find a work that is comprehensive in collection and detailed in analysis, none surpasses *Zhunsheng* (Standard of Diagnosis). This compilation strives for conciseness, aiming to make the reader's vision clear and mind refreshed; thus, the approaches taken vary.
2. Regarding Zhang Zhongjing's *Shanghan Lun* (Treatise on Cold Damage), it is advisable to consult the辨证 (pattern differentiation) discussions of various schools. Here, only a few excerpts from *Yixue Xinyu* (Medical Enlightenment) are selected, and it is impossible to record them all.
3. Spring-warmth (Chunwen) and summer-heat syndromes often involve latent-cold cold damage (Fuqi Shanghan, where pathogenic cold lies dormant within the body and manifests later). The pathogen emerges from the Kidney. This corresponds to the classic statement: "If one is injured by cold in winter, one will inevitably suffer from warmth diseases in spring; if one fails to store essence in winter, one will inevitably suffer from warmth diseases in spring." This differs from pathogens inhaled through the mouth and nose, which lie dormant at the Mu Yuan (Moyuan, the space between the exterior and interior); their depth varies, and treatments differ accordingly. Students should observe and distinguish them separately.
4. In the treatment of seasonal epidemic diseases (Shiyi Zheng), Zhang Jingyue erred by overusing warming and tonifying methods, while Wu Keyou focused solely on urgent purgation (Jixia). *Zhangshi Yitong* (Comprehensive Essentials of Zhang) elucidates the concept of earth qi stagnation and steaming (Diqi Yuzheng, where damp-heat qi stagnates and steams), which is most worthy of reference and study.
5. Mr. Ye Tianshi (Ye Xiangyan) transmitted the *Linzheng Zhinan* (Guidelines for Clinical Practice). These case records were established according to diagnoses and consultations, leaving no time for refinement. However, regarding the Spleen and Stomach organs, which have historically been treated indistinguishably, Mr. Ye alone followed the principles of the classics, noting that the Spleen prefers dryness and the Stomach prefers coolness. He realized two key meanings: "Zang organs govern retention (Shou), while Fu organs govern unblocking (Tong)." He discussed how Li Dongyuan's Buzhong Yiqi Tang targets the Spleen, while Zhang Zhongjing's urgent purgation to preserve Yin targets the Stomach—how profound and exquisite! For instance, in cases of anorexia (Bushí), crude practitioners only know to dry the Spleen, leading to greater stagnation with more drying. Mr. Ye alone advocated nourishing Stomach Yin, and following his treatment yielded consistent results. Such insights are what I have long held dear and firmly believed in.
6. Liver wind dizziness is similar to stroke-like syndromes (Lei Zhongfeng) and could originally be grouped into one category. Here, following the example of the *Zhinan*, it is singled out separately to draw attention.
7. Eye disorders, throat diseases, and breast diseases all belong to specialized departments. Their symptoms and treatments are complex and cumbersome, making it impossible to compile them fully. Here, only their essentials are summarized.
8. Discussions on various syndromes are based on classical theories, and ancient formulas are carefully selected for use. Outlines and sub-items are derived through layer-by-layer deduction. However, the specific ingredients in the formulas could not be verified one by one, due to my declining energy in old age. Readers are asked to understand this.
9. In the text, periods "." are used for essential points, and enumeration marks "、" are used for outline points, so that readers can grasp the intent at a glance.
10. For repeated formula names, drug ingredients are not annotated, but rather noted as appearing in a specific volume and syndrome. For formulas with the same name but different ingredients, the original formulas are still recorded.
11. Surgery belongs to a separate discipline. A few essays on surgery are now appended at the end of the volume, so that readers may briefly understand the essentials.
