Floating pulse indicates wind, tight pulse indicates cold. Floating and slippery pulses indicate wind-phlegm; surging and rapid pulses indicate wind-heat. A wiry pulse at the yang position indicates headache; a thin and firm pulse indicates dampness. A wiry and choppy pulse indicates qi deficiency; a knotted (hollow) pulse indicates blood deficiency. A slippery pulse indicates phlegm-jue (syncope due to phlegm); if headache is accompanied by an urgent, short, and choppy pulse, it is a fatal prognosis. Whenever the cun pulse is short, it primarily indicates headache; a tight, or floating, short, or wiry pulse at the cunkou position all primarily indicate headache.
