Strain the dregs and take warm.
**Mahuang Shengma Tang (Ephedra and Cimicifuga Decoction)** (Formula 25) After six or seven days of Shanghan, following severe purgation, if the Cun (inch) pulse is deep and slow, hands and feet are cold and inverted, the lower pulses are imperceptible, the throat is obstructed, pus and blood are expectorated, and diarrhea persists without stopping, it is difficult to treat. This formula is indicated. (This belongs to Jueyin.)
*Mahuang* (Ephedrae Herba, 2.5 liang, remove joints, soak in hot water, drain yellow juice, dry and weigh) *Shengma* (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) *Danggui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1.1 liang each) *Zhimu* (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) *Huangqin* (Scutellariae Radix) *Weirui* (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma, 0.3 liang each) *Shaoyao* (Paeoniae Radix Alba) *Maimendong* (Ophiopogonis Radix, remove heart)

Chop the herbs into pieces the size of hemp seeds. For each dose, scoop five *qian bi*. Add one and a half *zhan* of water. Boil until eight-tenths of the liquid remains. Strain the dregs and take warm. After approximately the time it takes to cook a meal, administer another dose. Recovery occurs with sweating.
**Gegen Tang (Kudzu Decoction)** (Formula 26) In Taiyang disease, if there is stiffness in the neck and back, anhidrosis, and aversion to wind, or if there is a concurrent Taiyang and Yangming disease resulting in spontaneous diarrhea, this formula is indicated. (This belongs to Taiyang.)
*Gegen* (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 2 liang) *Guizhi* (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove bark) *Gancao* (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, honey-fried) *Shaoyao* (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1 liang each) *Mahuang* (Ephedrae Herba, 1.5 liang, remove joints, soak in hot water, drain yellow juice, dry and weigh)
Chop the herbs into pieces the size of hemp seeds. For each dose, scoop five *qian bi*. Add four slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and one Zaozi (Jujube). Add one and a half *zhan* of water. Boil until eight-tenths of the liquid remains. Strain the dregs and take warm. Cover with blankets to induce sweating as the goal.
**Gegen Banxia Tang (Kudzu and Pinellia Decoction)** (Formula 27) In concurrent Taiyang and Yangming disease, if there is no diarrhea but only vomiting, this formula is indicated. (This belongs to Taiyang.)
*Gegen* (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 4 liang; or 1 liang) *Banxia* (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum, 6 qian 1 zi) *Mahuang* (Ephedrae Herba, 0.3 liang, remove joints, soak in hot water, drain yellow juice, dry and weigh)
*Gancao* (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, honey-fried) *Guizhi* (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove bark) *Shaoyao* (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 0.5 liang each)
Chop the herbs into pieces the size of hemp seeds. For each dose, scoop five *qian bi*. Add four slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and one Zaozi (Jujube). Add one and a half *zhan* of water. Boil until eight-tenths of the liquid remains. Strain the dregs and take warm. Cover with blankets to induce slight sweating.
**Gegen Huangqin Huanglian Tang (Kudzu, Scutellaria, and Coptis Decoction)** (Formula 28) In Taiyang disease, if a patient presenting Guizhi Tang syndrome is incorrectly treated with purgatives, resulting in persistent diarrhea, and the pulse is rapid indicating the exterior pathogen has not resolved, accompanied by wheezing and sweating, this formula is indicated.
*Gegen* (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 4 liang) *Huangqin* (Scutellariae Radix, 1.5 liang) *Huanglian* (Coptidis Rhizoma, 6 liang; or 2.5 liang) *Gancao* (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, 2 liang, honey-fried)
Chop the herbs into pieces the size of hemp seeds. For each dose, take five *qian* of medicine. Add one and a half *zhan* of water. Boil until eight-tenths of the liquid remains. Strain the dregs and take warm. Administer two to three doses per day.
**Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction)** (Formula 29) If ten days have passed since Taiyang disease, and the pulse is floating and fine with a desire to sleep, the exterior has resolved. If there is chest fullness and pain, administer this formula. If the pulse is merely floating, administer Mahuang Tang. ○ In Shanghan for five to six days, or Wind Strike, presenting alternating chills and fever, bitter distension in the chest and hypochondrium, silent desire not to eat, irritability, and frequent vomiting, or alternatively chest irritability without vomiting, thirst, or abdominal pain, or hypochondriac hardness, or palpitations, or difficulty urinating, or no thirst, slight body heat, or cough, this formula is indicated. ○ When blood is deficient and Qi is exhausted, the pores open, allowing pathogenic factors to enter and contend with healthy Qi. They knot at the hypochondrium. The struggle between pathogen and healthy Qi causes alternating chills and fever, occurring at intervals. Silence and loss of appetite result. Since the zang-fu organs are connected, pain often radiates downward. Pathogen is high, pain is low, causing vomiting. This formula is indicated. ○ After taking Chaihu Tang, if thirst develops, it indicates Yangming disease; treat according to Yangming methods. ○ In Shanghan for four to five days, with body heat, aversion to wind, stiff neck, hypochondriac fullness, warm hands and feet, and thirst, this formula is indicated. ○ In Shanghan, if the Yang pulse is choppy and the Yin pulse is string-like, acute abdominal pain is expected according to protocol. First administer Xiaojianzhong Tang. If it does not heal, this formula is indicated. ○ In Taiyang disease, after more than ten days, following sweating, vomiting, and purgation, if the Xiaochaihu Tang syndrome persists after four to five days, first administer Xiaochaihu Tang. If vomiting persists, epigastric urgency, and slight depression/irritability occur, the disease is unresolved. Administer Daxiehu Tang to purge, which will lead to recovery. ○ In women with Wind Strike for seven to eight days, if alternating chills and fever continue at intervals, and menstruation happens to cease, this is Heat entering the Blood Chamber. The blood must clot, causing symptoms resembling malaria. This formula is indicated. ○ In Shanghan for five to six days, if there is head sweating, slight aversion to cold, cold hands and feet, epigastric fullness, loss of appetite, hard stool, and a thin pulse, this is a slight Yang knotting. There must be both exterior and interior involvement. A deep pulse also indicates interior involvement. Sweating indicates slight Yang deficiency. If it were pure Yin knotting, there would be no exterior signs, all being interior. This is half-exterior, half-interior. Even if the pulse is deep and tight, it cannot be diagnosed as
Shaoyin disease. The reason is that Yin syndromes do not present with sweating. Head sweating indicates it is not Shaoyin. This formula may be administered. If the patient feels unsettled, passing stool will resolve it. ○ In Shanghan for five to six days, if there is vomiting and fever, the Chaihu Tang syndrome is complete. If purgatives were incorrectly used, and the Chaihu syndrome persists, re-administer Chaihu Tang. Although purged, this is not a counter-indication. The patient will likely experience shivering followed by fever and sweating, leading to resolution. If there is epigastric fullness and abdominal pain, this is a Chest Binding (Jie Xiong); Da Xiexin Tang is indicated. If there is fullness without pain, this is a Pi (Glomus) syndrome; Chaihu Tang is not suitable. Banxia Xiexin Tang is appropriate. (Above belongs to Taiyang) ○ In Yangming disease, if there is tidal fever, loose stools, normal urination, and persistent hypochondriac fullness, administer this formula. ○ In Yangming disease, if there is hypochondriac hardness, constipation, vomiting, and a white coating on the tongue, this formula may be administered. Once the Upper Jiao is unblocked, fluids descend, Stomach Qi harmonizes, and natural sweating resolves the condition. ○ In Yangming Wind Strike, if the pulse is string-like, floating, large, with shortness of breath, general abdominal fullness, hypochondriac and cardiac pain, obstruction of Qi upon prolonged pressing, dry nose, inability to sweat, lethargy, generalized and ocular jaundice, difficult urination, tidal fever, occasional hiccups, swelling of the front and back of the body, acupuncture provides slight relief, but the exterior remains unresolved. If the disease lasts over ten days and the pulse continues to float, this formula is indicated. (Above belongs to Yangming) ○ If Taiyang disease does not resolve and transfers to Shaoyang, presenting with hypochondriac hardness, dry retching, inability to eat, alternating chills and fever, and before vomiting/purgation/sweating/warm needle therapy, if the pulse is deep and tight, this formula is indicated. If vomiting, purging, sweating, or warm needles have been used, causing delirium, and the Xiaochaihu Tang syndrome has ceased, this is a damaged syndrome. Determine the error and treat accordingly. (Above belongs to Shaoyang) ○ Vomiting with fever is suitable for administration. ○ After recovery from Shanghan, if fever recurs, this formula is indicated. If the pulse is floating, resolve with sweating. If the pulse is deep and solid, resolve with purging. (Belongs to differentiating Mai Zheng of post-illness labor recurrence)
*Huangqin* (Scutellariae Radix, 1.5 liang. If abdominal pain, remove Huangqin, add Shaoyao 1.5 liang; Shaoyao can be 0.3 liang. If epigastric palpitations and difficult urination, remove Huangqin, add Fuling 2 liang)
