Gua Di San (Formula No. 111) The symptoms resemble those of the Guizhi Tang syndrome, but there is no headache or stiffness in the neck and occiput. The pulse at the Cun position is slightly floating. There is a sensation of fullness and hardness in the chest, with Qi rushing upward to the throat and pharynx, causing difficulty in breathing. This indicates the presence of cold pathogen in the chest. The appropriate treatment is emesis, and Gua Di San should be administered (belonging to the Taiyang disease category).
Gua Di (Thladiantrae Fructus), roasted until yellow; Chi Xiao Dou (Adzukii Semen), half liang each.
Each herb is crushed and sifted separately, then mixed together. Take one qian bi (a measure equivalent to approximately 3-5 grams) of the powder, combined with one he (a measure of volume) of Dan Chi Shi (Sojae Semen Praeparatum), and seven he of boiling water. Soak first for a moment, then boil into a thin porridge consistency. Strain to remove dregs and take the juice. Mix with the powder and take warm in one dose. If vomiting does not occur, increase the dosage slightly; stop once vigorous vomiting is achieved. This formula is contraindicated in patients who have suffered blood loss or are constitutionally deficient.
Mi Jian Dao Fang (Formula No. 112) In Yangming disease, if there is spontaneous sweating, or after diaphoresis therapy, and urination is free and abundant, this indicates exhaustion of body fluids internally. Although the stool is hard, purgative methods should not be used. One should wait for the natural desire to defecate and use Mi Jian Dao to facilitate passage; alternatively, Tugua Gen (Puerariae Radix) or large pig bile can also be used.
Mi (Honey), four liang.
Take this single ingredient, place it in a copper vessel, and gently heat over a low fire. Stir constantly to prevent burning until it thickens like maltose syrup. When it reaches a state suitable for molding, shape it into suppositories the thickness of a finger and two cun in length. Insert into the anus and hold the buttocks tightly by hand. Remove only when the urge to defecate arises.
