Anger, sorrow, fear, love, dislike, and desire; alternatively stated as liking, love, and dislike. Injuries caused by emotional states all belong to Fire-Heat (Re). The principle is that Yang moves and Yin is still. Therefore, when the physical form and spirit are overworked, there is restlessness and lack of tranquility; when quiet, there is clarity and peace. Thus, the highest good is like water, while the lowest foolishness is like fire. The ancient sages said: The six desires and seven emotions are obstacles to the Dao because they belong to Fire.
For instance, in cases of wind-stroke with hemiplegia, it arises from a sudden excess of Heart Fire, while Kidney Water is deficient and unable to control it. Consequently, Fire conquers Metal, and Metal fails to control Wood, leading to an excessive state of Liver Wood combined with Fire-Heat. This results in sudden rigidity and collapse, often due to excessive stimulation of the five zhi and seven emotions, causing sudden illness. Similarly, intoxication with alcohol generates heat, causing the five zhi and seven emotions to arise competitively. Thus, the *Classic* states: trembling, confusion, grief mixed with laughter, delirious muttering or singing, cursing, mania, and madness are all manifestations of Heat. Therefore, mania and madness caused by severe Heat are all of this nature.
(Laughter)
Laughter: characterized by flourishing, freshness, comfort, and manifestation, it is the transformation of Fire. Hence, joy is the emotion associated with Heart Fire. Extreme joy leading to laughter is analogous to the sound produced by burning fire; thus, pathological laughter indicates an excess of Fire. Alternatively, if the heart does not originally feel joy but one laughs due to mockery or playfulness, it is commonly called a "cold smile." If one provokes another regarding their improper conduct, causing them to feel ashamed and lose their resolve, this violation of one's own heart leads to laughter.
If light touching disturbs the neck, axilla, abdomen, hypochondrium, thighs, popliteal fossa, feet, and dorsum of the feet, causing itching and laughter, this is due to agitation and disturbance, which is the function of Fire; tranquility and clarity are the transformation of Water. Areas of the skin that are prominent and manifest belong to Fire, while tender and hidden areas belong to Water. When the function of Fire disturbs the aspect of Water, causing shame and loss of resolve accompanied by itching, it indicates deficient Water and旺盛 Fire, resulting in laughter.
If self-tickling does not produce laughter, it is because there is no shame or itching. However, if there is shame and itching, it is the transformation of Heart Fire. When a person loses trust and resolve, feeling shame gradually, it is due to deficient Water and substantial Fire. Resolve and trust are transformations of Kidney Water. If there is itching without shame, or shame without itching, neither can produce laughter because the transformative power is too weak to cause change.
(Delirious Speech)
Delirious speech: excessive talking. Speech is the voice of the heart, analogous to the sound of burning fire. Therefore, when Heart Fire is hot, there is excessive talking, similar to being drunk with a hot heart. If one talks excessively during sleep, commonly known as somniloquy, it indicates mild Heat. If Heat is severe, waking occurs with mental confusion and lack of clarity, resulting in delirious speech. Spontaneous sweating, palpitations, and teeth-grinding are also related. It is said that during sleep, Ying and Wei Qi cannot circulate outward, leading to Qi stagnation internally; thus, interior Heat emerges.
The highest good is like water, the lowest foolishness is like fire. Therefore, those of high virtue keep the six desires and seven emotions at a distance, while the foolish indulge in them. The seven emotions—joy, anger, sorrow, happiness, liking, dislike, and love—that occur in dreams exceed proper limits. Those that cannot be overcome are due to severe internal Heat stagnation during sleep. Ordinary dreams are what common people call "dreams within dreams," moving further away from the Dao; those who awaken from dreams are still dreaming the dream of the Dao; thus, achieving the Dao is considered great awakening, where the six desires and seven emotions cannot interfere. The ancients said, dreaming is the bewilderment of the spirit. In febrile diseases where one indulges in the seven emotions, it is due to deficient Water and a distant path.
(Insanity/Falsehood)
Insanity: falsehood. Fire is Yang, so externally clear but internally turbid. It tends toward agitation. Therefore, when Heart Fire is excessive, Kidney Water becomes deficient, and the will lacks focus. False perceptions and hallucinations, engaging in self-dialogue, indicate abnormal spirit and will, such as seeing ghosts and spirits. Some regard ghosts and spirits as Yin; seeing them indicates extreme Yin expelling Yang, lacking Yang Qi, which constitutes delusional speech.
(Nasal Bleeding, Blood Sweating, etc.)
Nasal bleeding, blood in sweat: emission of blood. Sweat is turbid. When Heart Fire reaches extremity, blood becomes excessive. Severe rising Heat causes blood overflow. When Heat intensity is extreme, dryness and turbid sweat occur. Following the principle of mutual restriction, the color mixes with black to become purple.
