There are twenty-three acupoints of the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao (Triple Burner) Meridian: Guanzhong (LI16, note: actually TE1), Yemen (TE2), Zhongzhu (TE3), Yangchi (TE4), Waiguan (TE5), Zhigou (TE6), Huizong (TE7), Sanyangluo (TE8), Sidu (TE9), Tianjing (TE10), Qinglengyuan (TE11), Xiaoluo (TE12), Jianliao (TE13), Tianliao (TE14), Tianyou (TE15), Yifeng (TE17), Zhi Mai (TE18), Luxi (TE19), Jiaosun (TE20), Ermen (TE21), Heliao (TE22), Sizhukong (TE23). The methods for selecting points in this meridian require careful study and detailed examination.
Guanzhong is located at the lateral end of the ring finger; Yemen is in the depression between the little and ring fingers; Zhongzhu is on the dorsum of the hand, between the fourth and fifth metacarpal bones, one cun proximal to the dorsal wrist crease; Yangchi is in the depression at the dorsal wrist crease. Waiguan is two cun proximal to the dorsal wrist crease; Zhigou is three cun proximal to the dorsal wrist crease (between the two bones of the posterior forearm); Huizong is on the medial side three cun proximal to the dorsal wrist crease; there is an empty point here that must be sought with care. Sanyangluo is four cun proximal to the dorsal wrist crease; Sidu is five cun proximal to the elbow tip; Tianjing is behind the large bone posterior to the lateral elbow tip, palpated one cun within the interosseous gap. Qinglengyuan is two cun posterior to the elbow; Xiaoluo is seen below the axillary arm, under the root of the axillary hair; Jianliao is three cun anterior to the acromion process (anterior to the shoulder, in the depression three cun from the shoulder head); Tianliao is in the central depression above the superior angle of the scapula. Tianyou is posterior to Tiannrong (located lateral to the major tendon of the neck, above the clavicle fossa, posterior to Tiannrong, anterior to Tianzhu, inferior to Wanggu, superior to the hairline); Yifeng is in the depression at the posterior sharp angle of the ear (pressing it draws sensation into the ear); Zhi Mai is where green veins appear behind the ear; Luxi is also located at the green collateral vessels. Jiaosun is superior to the middle of the auricular cartilage; Ermen is in the flesh rising anterior to the ear (the fleshy prominence anterior to the ear, corresponding to the tragus gap); Heliao is where the artery pulses anterior to the ear. To find Sizhukong, carefully measure the depression posterior to the eyebrow.
[Image: Diagram of Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian]
[Image: Diagram of Gallbladder Organ]
The gallbladder is located between the short lobes of the liver. It weighs three taels and three zhu, stores three he of essence juice, and resembles a flask.
Zhongzi stated: "The gallbladder is like a burden-bearer; it is the official of uprightness, and decision-making arises from it," implying it has responsibility.
The Foot-Shaoyang Meridian belongs to the Gallbladder. The gallbladder is the official of uprightness, and decision-making arises from it. It is also said: "The gallbladder is tranquil (Dan); it is the pure and clear organ, receiving nothing and transmitting nothing, remaining calm and quiet." Its weight is three taels and three zhu, containing three he of essence juice. It resides among the short lobes of the liver, sharing form and substance with the liver. In the Heavenly Stems, it corresponds to Jia (Yang Wood); in the Earthly Branches, it governs Yin; in the Eight Trigrams, it corresponds to Zhen; it is exterior-interior paired with the Liver. This meridian has abundant Qi and scarce Blood, with Qi and Blood entering it during the Zi hour (11 PM - 1 AM).
Its clinical manifestations include: bitter taste in the mouth, frequent sighing, pain in the heart and hypochondrium preventing turning over, severe cases showing a dusty complexion, lack of luster in the body, heat on the lateral aspect of the foot, pain at the temporal angles and jaw, pain at the outer canthus, swelling and pain in the supraclavicular fossa, "horse knife" and "collarbone goiter" (cervical lymphadenopathy), and dysfunction of the fourth and fifth toes.
The meridian receives intersections from the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian. It originates at the outer canthus (Tongziliao GB1), passes through Tinghui GB2 and Kechuzhuren (Shangguan GB12), ascends to the temporal angle, traverses Hanyan GB13, descends through Xuanlu GB14 and Xuanli GB15, runs laterally along the ear, ascends to the hairline, reaching Qubin GB7 and Lvgu GB8; from Lvgu, it turns outward, descends behind the ear, following Tianchong GB9, Fubai GB10, Qiaoyin GB11, and Wanggu GB12; again turning outward from Wanggu, it ascends to meet Jiaosun TE20 of the Sanjiao Meridian, follows Benshen GB13, intersects with Qucha BL6 of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian, then descends, following Yangbai GB14 of this meridian, intersecting again with Jingming BL1 of the Bladder Meridian ascending, following Linqi (Note: Text says "Linwei", likely referring to Yangbai/Linqi sequence or specific local naming), Mucuang GB16, Zhengying GB17, Chengling GB18, Naokong GB19, Fengchi GB20; from Fengchi, it follows the neck, intersecting with Tianyou TE15 of the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, descends to the shoulder, following Jianjing GB21 of this meridian, crossing left and right, emerging posterior to the Hand-Shaoyang, intersecting with Dazhui GV14 of the Du Vessel, Dashu BL11 of the Bladder Meridian, and Bingfeng SI12 of the Small Intestine Meridian (Bingfeng is the intersection of the Hand-Taiyang, Hand-Yangming, Hand-Shaoyang, and Foot-Shaoyang meridians), entering anteriorly the Qumen LI12/ST12 area of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, descending to the axilla, following the chest, traversing Yuanye GB24, Zhejin GB25, Riyue GB24, intersecting with the Ji Xie (hypochondriac region) of the Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel), following Jingmen GB25, Dimai (Note: likely Dai Mai alias or error), Wushu GB26, Weidao GB27, Juliao GB28, ascending to the middle of the thigh, crossing horizontally and descending, looping down, passing the lateral thigh, running between the Foot-Taiyang and Foot-Yangming meridians, following Zhongdu GB30 and Yangguan GB33, exiting the lateral knee, reaching Yanglingquan GB34, descending from Yanglingquan along the lateral fibula, traversing Yangjiao GB35, Waiqiu GB36, Guangming GB37, descending straight to the end of the Jiegu (distal fibula), following Yangfu GB38 and Xuanzhong GB39 descending, emerging anterior to the lateral malleolus, reaching Qiuxu GB40, following the dorsum of the foot through Linqi (Text says "Linwei", likely Feiyang or similar, but context suggests dorsum points), Di Wuhui GB41, Xiaxi GB43, ascending into the space between the fourth and fifth toes to conclude at Qiaoyin GB44;
Its branch diverges from the Linqi point on the dorsum of the foot, enters the big toe, follows the inner side of the岐骨 (sesamoid/metatarsal junction) after the base of the big toe, emerges at the tip of the big toe, penetrates the nail bed past the tuft of hair, and connects with the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian, ascending from Dadun LR1, Xingjian LR2, and Taichong LR3. Note: This meridian has three curves in the neck, which diagrams cannot fully depict, hence the detailed description for clarity. From Tongziliao to Fengchi, there are twenty acupoints, forming three bends moving outward: the first bend starts from Tongziliao to Wanggu; the second bend turns outward from Wanggu to ascend to Mingyang meeting Jingming; the third bend ascends from Jingming, following Linqi and Fengchi. Due to the curvature of these points, they cannot be annotated sideways, so they are listed sequentially from one to twenty: 1. Tongziliao, 2. Tinghui, 3. Kechuzhuren, 4. Hanyan, 5. Xuanlu, 6. Xuanli, 7. Qubin, 8. Lvgu, 9. Tianchong, 10. Fubai, 11. Qiaoyin, 12. Wanggu, 13. Benshen, 14. Yangbai, 15. Linqi (Text: Linwei), 16. Mucuang, 17. Zhengying (Text erroneously numbered 16), 18. Chengling, 19. Naokong, 20. Fengchi.
