A farmer in Jin Zhuang was sleeping soundly on the ground during a summer day when a centipede entered his mouth. Upon waking, he felt a sensation of obstruction in his throat, as if something were stuck; it could neither be coughed out nor swallowed down. He experienced unpredictable pain and itching, suffering greatly. A physician prescribed breaking an egg, mixing it with wine, and having the patient drink it all at once. Simultaneously, the patient took Rhizoma Polygoni Officinalis (Dahuang, 大黄) powder mixed with sesame oil. Shortly after, the patient defecated a centipede that was still alive and moving. This occurred because the centipede was constrained by the viscosity of the egg, preventing its legs from extending, which facilitated the action of the medicine, allowing it to be expelled via the large intestine. Chickens naturally eat centipedes, reflecting the principle of mutual restriction. (From *Shuyuan Zaji*)
Those whose eyes are damaged often have poor destinies, primarily due to the conflict between Mao and You. Mao and You are the gates of the sun and moon, representing light. Mao is punished by Zi, and You represents self-punishment, inevitably leading to eye diseases; this verification often holds true. (From Zhou Mi's *Guixin Zazhi*)
Why does sudden severe eye pain, heat, and swelling fail to improve with cold-natured decoctions but heal after drinking distilled liquor? Furthermore, when the disease location is superficial but the constitution is robust, the treatment principles in the *Neijing* allow for the use of "Jie Fa" (robust attack method), using hot medicines to drive out pathogens, causing heat qi to circulate and dissipate, which aligns with this case. However, for patients with chronic diseases involving deficiency and weak constitutions, standard treatment ("Zheng Zhi") should be used. Applying the Jie Fa would exacerbate the condition and is therefore inadvisable.
The *Yanshi Jiaxun* states: "I once suffered from loose teeth that threatened to fall out, experiencing pain with both hot and cold foods. One day, while reading *Baopuzi*, I encountered a method for strengthening teeth: clenching teeth three hundred times every morning. It was very effective. After practicing it for several days, my teeth recovered."
Previously, Wang Wanli suffered from ear pain. Duke Wei Wenjing advised him to take a pill prepared from Green Salt, Antler Gelatin (Lurong, 鹿茸), Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄), and Prepared Radix Aconiti Lateralis (Fuzi, 附子). He stated that this medicine is not intended for treating royal deficiency. Why not refer to the *I Ching*? The Kan trigram corresponds to the ears. Pain arises because Kan Water resides in the Kidney, which opens into the ears. In terms of emotions, Water corresponds to Fear, and Fear damages the Kidney, thus causing ear pain. Qi belongs to Yang, moving and manifesting frequently; Blood belongs to Yin, circulating and remaining hidden frequently. Blood within the form is like water within heaven and earth; therefore, Kan is the Blood Trigram. This pathology has already been described in meridian theory. Ultimately, the patient recovered after taking the medicine. (From Yang Shengan's *Danqian Xulu*)
Ancient Fangs' "Bi Yuan" (Nasal Sinusitis/Brain Leakage) is equivalent to modern "Nao Lou". One must clearly distinguish between Cold and Heat syndromes. If the nasal discharge has a foul odor, it belongs to Heat syndrome, suitable for dispersal with Acrid-Cool herbs. If the discharge is clear, odorless, but smells fishy, it belongs to Deficiency-Cold syndrome, suitable for tonification with Mild-Warm herbs. These two conditions require careful differentiation. In the past, a scholar suffered from this condition with a rapid and frequent pulse. Knowing he had internal heat, I used Yellow Fish Brain (the two bony structures in the head of the Stone Mouth Fish, Shi Shou Yu, 石首鱼), roasting thirty pieces until carbonized but retaining their nature, then grinding them into powder. First, one or two fen were insufflated into the nose, followed by five fen taken with wine. After a few doses, he was completely cured with no recurrence.
