Zhang Jingyue treated the son of the Hu family, who was only three years old. Due to irregular diet, pediatricians administered formulas for clearing fire and resolving phlegm, which damaged his Stomach Qi (Stomach energy), leading to vomiting and loose stools. Subsequently, cooling and draining agents were used, resulting in the expulsion of Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworms). Initially, only a few worms were expelled, but this gradually increased to dozens. The worms were as thin as rushlights, sometimes forming clumps that twisted and emerged continuously day and night; similar worms were also found in the feces. The child was extremely emaciated and weak. Therefore, Wenyin Decoction (Warming Stomach Decoction) was prescribed for two or three doses, but the worms remained unchanged. It was unclear where they came from, nor how their reproduction could be so rapid. The family suggested expelling the worms first, arguing that if the worms were expelled, the condition would worsen, implying that worms cannot generate spontaneously. Zhang Jingyue did not heed this advice but instead doubled the dosage of Renshen (Ginseng Root) in the previous formula and added Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root). After two or three doses, vomiting gradually decreased, and diarrhea ceased. Thereafter, Liyin Jian (Nourishing Yin Decoction) and Wenyin Decoction were alternated. After more than ten days, the number of worms gradually diminished. Within a month, the child resumed eating, muscles grew, and he recovered completely. Generally, vermifuge drugs tend to damage Stomach Qi. Had the Stomach Qi been further injured, not only would the worms not have been expelled, but the illness would likely have become incurable. By strengthening the Stomach Qi daily, the source of worm generation was eliminated, leading to recovery.
It is commonly believed that sugarcane is suitable for children, even during smallpox, with no contraindications. However, physicians argued vehemently. Some claimed it has a hot nature, causing rashes to erupt; others said it is cold, thus detoxifying; still others stated it is warm and neutral, posing no harm. Later, upon reviewing medical texts, I found: "Sugarcane can regulate Ascaris lumbricoides; if there are many, it reduces them; if few, it increases them. When the worms are balanced, the child is healthy, hence it is suitable for children." This transcends the debate on cold, hot, warm, and neutral properties. Physicians should not speculate rashly; such arguments are indeed laughable. (Li Rihua, *Zitao Xuan Youzhui*: Commentary: This theory is unreliable. My fourth sister, when young, fell ill after consuming excessive amounts of sugarcane.)
The ten-year-old son of the Zhang family from Yuebu suffered from heart pain since childhood, inherited from his mother's constitution, occurring intermittently. During attacks, he refused food, groaned, and the episodes lasted three to four days. Xue Ji (courtesy name Zhongchun) prescribed a formula that stopped the pain immediately upon ingestion. The prescription consisted of: Binglang (Areca Seed) and Heiqiu (Black Morning Glory Seed) each 1 qian, Muxiang (Costus Root) 0.5 fen, Shijunzi (Quince Fruit), Juhong (Aged Tangerine Peel), Baishao (White Peony Root), and Xuanjinhua (Inula Flower) each 2 qian, Fuling (Poria) 3 qian, and Zhuling (Polyporus) 1.5 qian. (From *Guang Biji*.)
Jiang Zhongfang treated the son of Wei Jiaorang, aged ten, who had suffered from lower abdominal pain for three or four years without effect from other physicians. Pulse diagnosis revealed a deep and slow pulse, normal urination and defecation, and no palpable masses upon pressure. This indicated deficiency-cold of the Kidney system. The patient was cured using Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) supplemented with Paojiang (Roasted Ginger), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark), Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), Cheqian (Plantago Seed), and Niuxi (Achyranthes Root). (Commentary: Paojiang is inferior to Juhe (Tangerine Seed) or Huixiang (Fennel); alternatively, Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) may be substituted.)
