Wan Mizhai treated the son of Zhu Zhen-san, who had a lump on the throat resembling a plum. The *Yuan Bing Shi* states: "Tubercles are caused by heat." I further consulted the Materia Medica for herbs that resolve tubercles and formulated a prescription: Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu), Sargassum (Kunbu), Sargassum (Haizao), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Hordei Fructus Germinatus (Maiya), and Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe) each 1.5 qian; Persicariae Hirtae Herba (Zibei Tiankui), Scrophulariae Radix (Yuanshen), Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao), and Dianthi Herba (Qumai) each 2 qian. These were ground into powder and taken with warm water, yielding immediate effect. Subsequently, patients taking this formula achieved consistent results, and it was named Shenyang Dan (Miraculous Efficacy Pill).
The son of Shuai Bi-quan developed a tubercle below the neck. It was treated as a gan sore (ulcerative condition associated with malnutrition or chronic disease); the medication caused tissue destruction, leading to increased swelling. This area is traversed by the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel); damage to Yuan Qi (Original Qi) resulted in a gan syndrome, which proved incurable.
Wang Si-quan’s four-year-old daughter had a tubercle behind the side of her ear. I stated: "This is not a gan sore, but a phlegm nodule (Tan He). No treatment is necessary, nor will it cause harm." Other physicians treated it as a gan sore, using excessive internal-resolving medications containing Mylabris (Banmao), damaging the Spleen and Stomach, leading to death from gan consumption (gan lao).
Zhu’s five-year-old son presented with a plum-sized lump below the throat, accompanied by two or three smaller connected lumps on either side. The prescription used Dongyuan’s Liang Ge San (Cool the Chest Powder) minus Licorice Root (Gancao), plus Gentiana Radix (Longdancao), Scrophulariae Radix (Yuanshen), Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu), Sargassum (Haizao), and Hordei Fructus Germinatus (Maiya), processed into pills the size of a bullet. One pill was taken per dose, crushed and mixed with warm wine. The patient stabilized after seven days. This formula subsequently saved many children.
Xue Lizhai treated a seven-year-old boy with two cervical tubercles, intermittent fever and chills, persisting for a long time. He was cured with Lianqiao Wan (Forsythia Pills). If lesions occur on the arms or other areas, this medication is particularly indicated. If ulceration occurs without healing, tonifying and expelling pus formulas should be administered.
(Attached Case: Qian Fu Yang)
Xue Lizhai treated a two-year-old boy suffering from penile flaccidity, dampness, itching, frequent scratching and rubbing, internal penile pain, and discharge of white fluid. Diagnosed as Liver Fire, he was cured with Longdan Xiegan Tang (Gentiana Decoction to Drain the Liver) and Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill).
A boy with an ulcerated chancre (xia gan) presented with fever and pain. Another boy suffered from internal penile pain and frequent scratching. A third boy had ulcerated penile pain, scanty and difficult urination, worsening in the late afternoon. A fourth boy had itchy eyes discharging fluid, cervical tubercles, adhering eyelids, or scrotal itching. All cases were attributed to Liver Fire and were simultaneously cured using Jiwei Luhui Wan (Nine-Ingredient Aloe Vera Pills).
Wan Mizhai treated the young daughter of Prefect San, whose urine flowed like clear water, causing ulceration where it contacted the skin. He asked: "Has the girl’s zang-fu organs deteriorated?" He answered: "The Bladder receives fluids from the five zang organs to store them, transforming them into urine. Each follows the color of its respective organ; green is the color of the Liver. Ulceration at contact sites indicates excess Liver Fire. Burning by fire leads to ulceration." He prescribed Daochi San (Guide Out Red Powder) plus Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhi), Scutellariae Radix (Tiaohuangqin), Gentiana Radix (Danchangcao), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao Shao), and Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), formed into pills. The patient recovered after five days of regulation.
Xue Lizhai treated the sixteen-year-old son of Minister Wei Bangning, who suffered from erosion and ulceration of the nose and eyes. His Liver pulse was wiry and long; he experienced persistent anger for three years without relief, and various medicines failed. After taking half a dose of Luhui Wan (Aloe Vera Pill), symptoms receded immediately, and one full dose resulted in a cure.
A boy with an ulcerated chancre presented with black nails, sallow complexion, and generalized scabies. This was diagnosed as internal and external gan syndrome of the Kidney channel. He was treated primarily with Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) supplemented with Simei Fei'er Wan (Four-Ingredient Strengthening the Child Pill) and recovered.
Qiu Rucheng treated an infant whose penis was bound by a fan, causing swelling and inability to remove it. The infant cried out in despair. Qiu ordered water to be splashed into a vessel; the sudden noise startled the child, causing him to cry, after which the condition resolved.
