Zhang Yin'an stated: In the Xinmao year of the Shunzhi reign, when I was forty-two years old, in August, I developed a stomach epigastrium abscess (Weiwan Yong). It was located obliquely below the Jiwei acupoint (CV15), approximately one cun to the right. It was slightly swollen but not red, and painless upon pressure. I felt a lump inside, roughly the size of a chicken egg. Yao Jiyuan examined it and said, "This is a stomach epigastrium abscess, also known as Pengxin Yong (Hand-Holding-Heart Abscess). You must rapidly resolve the pathogenic factors, otherwise, there will be danger to your life." He applied a large plaster with two or three qian of powdered medicine sprinkled on top, warmed in the center before application. By evening, my hands and feet became soft and weak, progressing to an inability to turn my body; I lay supine in my study, feeling restless and agitated, dismissing my family members. At the first watch of the night, a toxic vapor rose from the abscess, traveling from below the left breast through the ribs, descending into the left kidney. Upon entry, it felt like a burning awl piercing my eyes, accompanied by a flash of light, large as a wheel, causing faintness and unbearable pain. As the light gradually faded and dispersed, my consciousness slowly returned. After about half an hour, the sensation rose again, following the same path, with similar pain, occurring three or four times. I reasoned that this represented the combination of Wu (Yang Earth) and Gui (Yin Water), where pathogenic factors from the Fu organs invaded the Zang organs, leading me to believe death was inevitable. I then imagined that if this toxic vapor did not enter the kidney via the hypochondrium but instead entered the intestines and stomach from the middle jiao, I would survive. Through quiet mental visualization, the first attempt failed, but the second time, following my intention, the sensation still traveled from below the left breast but entered the intestines. Loud borborygmi occurred in the abdomen, and the previous pain ceased. Rising up, I continued this mental guidance, realizing the principle of self-cultivation: Qi moves according to intention. By dawn, I had several episodes of diarrhea, and my chest and diaphragm felt relaxed. Mr. Yao Jiyuan examined me and said, "The toxicity has dissipated; you are safe." I asked, "Is the plaster poisonous?" He replied, "The powder applied on top is called 'Duanwu Medicine,' composed purely of Realgar (Pishuang) and Croton Seed (Badou), prepared on the Dragon Boat Festival. Without such toxic substances, how could they penetrate the skin and flesh?" I said, "Why didn't you say so earlier? Last night I thought I would surely die from the poison. This morning I realized the plaster contained toxic medicine, which saved my life." The use of toxic drugs to attack disease is indeed miraculous. The condition recurred on the Mid-Autumn Festival of the following year. Using the same plaster and powder yielded no effect, and the swelling did not subside. I relied on the subtlety of Qi circulation, practicing walking, sitting, and lying down while massaging with my hands, visualizing the toxin returning to the intestines and stomach for expulsion. After more than ten days, it resolved. On the Mid-Autumn Festival of the subsequent year, it recurred again. I told Mr. Yao Jiyuan, "Last year's plaster was ineffective; we must try another method." Mr. Yao said, "Lady Liu, wife of Vice Minister Liu, suffered from this illness. She used a specially prepared powder, even more toxic than the previous one, which caused large blisters upon application. This medicine is invariably effective." After applying it for several days, no blisters formed, and the swelling persisted. I reasoned that the condition had become stubborn and resistant to toxic suppression. I removed the plaster and applied large moxa cones to the head (Yingtou area) for nine moxibustion sessions (Zhuang). The toxin dispersed with the fire heat, and it never recurred thereafter. I deduced that the Yangming toxin flares during the Mid-Autumn period when Metal energy is prosperous. Initially, it was resolved by attacking the toxin; subsequently, it dissipated with Qi circulation; finally, it was controlled by overcoming principles. Thus, I realized the profound utility of Qi circulation regulation and the laws of Five Elements interaction. Humans correspond with Heaven and Earth; applying these principles to treat all diseases yields extraordinary results. Mr. Wang Shaolong remarked, "Practitioners must personally experience various diseases to truly master them."
Wang Hongxu stated: Jingquan Ju (Well-Spring Carbuncle) arises at the heart's mouth (epigastrium/xiphoid area), also known as Manxin Ruidu (Slow-Heart Sharp Toxicity). Initially, if a lump is felt inside the epigastrium that gradually enlarges, causing the area to protrude, and if the toxin sinks inward, death ensues. This is a condition often avoided by physicians, and no treatment methods are recorded in standard texts. Only in our family's secret collection is it documented: Take the patient's ten fingers, measure their length with thread, accumulate the threads, and place them centrally over the trachea, looping around to the mid-spine. The point where the ends of the two threads meet is the Central Acupoint. Measure the middle segment of the patient's middle finger using a wooden core as one cun. Mark points one cun to the left and right of the Central Acupoint with ink, establishing three acupoints in a triangular formation. Apply three moxibustion sessions (Zhuang) to each acupoint simultaneously. Complete cure follows.
