Xue Lizhai treated a patient surnamed Gao, who was over thirty years old. After suffering from a febrile disease in summer, he developed a toxic sore on the chin (Yi). The lesion persisted for many days without subsiding. His breath was faint, his pulse was thready and minute, almost imperceptible, he had little appetite, and suffered from fecal incontinence. *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: "When the pulse seems present yet absent, thready and minute, it indicates the decline of Yang Qi." Qi Shi stated: "When food cannot be taken in and stool slips out uncontrollably, it indicates deficiency of the intestines and stomach." Consequently, Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) was prescribed with added Pao Jiang (Roasted Ginger), Rou Dou Kou (Nutmeg), and Po Gu Zhi (Psoralea Fruit). After several doses, the diarrhea stopped, and dietary intake slightly increased. Subsequently, Huang Qi (Astragalus), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis), and Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) were added to promote suppuration. The sore ulcerated, discharging thin pus. To the previous prescription, one qian of Shu Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root) was added per dose. After several doses, food intake improved, and the pus gradually became thicker. Finally, Shi Quan Da Bu Tang (Comprehensive Great Tonic Decoction) was used, employing Jiu Shao Yao (Wine-processed White Peony Root) and adding Bai Lian (Bletilla Rhizome). He recovered after more than a month.
Xue Lizhai treated Shi Xilu, an official titled 'Er Shou', who suffered from a toxic sore on the neck. Pus had already formed, but due to fear of acupuncture, treatment was delayed until the infection spread to the chest, appearing red like rosy clouds. His pulse was slippery and rapid; he could not eat, had not slept for over a month, and his limbs were extremely fatigued. This indicated that Qi and Blood were deficient, preventing the sore from ulcerating and discharging. Acupuncture was performed, and upon discharge of the pus, he fell asleep immediately. Upon waking, he desired food. Medications to support the healthy Qi and expel toxins were administered, and he recovered after two months. Liu Xi, whose constitution was inherently weak, suffered from this condition but did not undergo acupuncture. The sore ulcerated through the jaw and cheek, leading to further depletion of Qi and Blood, and he ultimately died despite treatment.
A woman suffered from a carbuncle on the neck, experiencing pain accompanied by chills and fever. Jing Fang Bai Du San (Jing-Jie and Fang-Feng Decoction to Eliminate Toxicity) was prescribed. After two doses, symptoms slightly improved. Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) was then modified with Lian Qiao (Forsythia), Niu Bang Zi (Arctium Seed), and Jie Geng (Platycodon Root). After four doses, the swelling resolved.
A man suffered from a toxic sore on the neck. After it ulcerated and caused pain, treatment with Ren Shen (Ginseng), Huang Qi (Astragalus), Di Huang (Rehmannia), Xiong Gui (Ligusticum and Angelica) was used to tonify, which alleviated the pain. Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) was then modified with Huang Qi (Astragalus) and Jie Geng (Platycodon Root). After more than thirty doses, he recovered.
Ma Yuanyi treated a woman of the Shen family who had a sore on the neck and nape. The pain was severe, accompanied by restlessness, fever, and insomnia day and night. Various treatments failed. Examination revealed floating and large pulses that became small upon deep pressure. This indicated a dual deficiency of Qi and Blood in the Yangming Meridian. The Qi of the Yangming Meridian circulates fifty times throughout the body in one day and night, followed by Blood. When Qi is deficient, Blood flow becomes stagnant, giving rise to disease. Moreover, the manifested symptoms were those of Blood deficiency and Qi decline, distinct from cases of excess Heat-Toxin. Huang Qi (Astragalus) 1 liang, Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis) 5 qian, Ren Shen (Ginseng) 3 qian, Zhi Cao (Honey-fried Licorice) 7 fen, and Hong Hua (Safflower) 5 fen were used to harmonize and tonify Qi and Blood. After four doses, the condition stabilized.
Zhang Hezi, while residing in Xihua at the home of Official Xia, suddenly developed a neck lesion. One type resembled a white sore, with a red and hard base. Because it was small, it was initially disregarded. An old friend invited him to drink Sheep Lamb Wine and consume chicken, fish, meat paste, and garlic. Zhang Hezi, unable to refuse his friend and forgetting dietary taboos, experienced unbearable pain that night. The neck swelling extended to the head, he spoke deliriously, and claimed to see spirits. Mr. Xia was terrified and wished to notify Zhang's family. Zhang Hezi smiled and said, "Do not worry; it will be flat tomorrow." He mixed Tong Jing San (Meridian-Penetrating Powder) with wine (6-7 qian) and administered over 100 pills of Zhou Che Wan (Boat Cart Pill). Then, he fed him hot noodle soup. This induced simultaneous vomiting and purging, each amounting to about half a zhan. By noon the next day, the swelling had flattened. Within one or two days, pus discharged, and he recovered.
Zhu Danxi treated Wang Gu-zhang (Uncle-in-law Wang), who was over seventy years old and suffered from a neck carbuncle. His pulse was solid and slightly large. This arose from sorrow and depression, affecting the Taiyang Meridian. Gui Tou (Angelica Head) 2 qian, Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark) 1.5 qian, Huang Qi (Astragalus), Qiang Huo (Notopterygium), Di Huang (Rehmannia), Jiu Qin (Wine-processed Scutellaria), and Jie Geng (Platycodon) each 1 qian; Jiu Lian (Wine-processed Coptis), Lian Qiao (Forsythia), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice), Ren Shen (Ginseng), Chen Pi (Citrus Peel), Fang Ji (Stephania), and Ze Xie (Alisma) each 0.5 qian. These were decocted in plain water and taken orally.
Chai Yuqing treated Jueluo Made, a banner officer of the Plain Yellow Banner under Xia Tongsi, who suffered from a duet carbuncle (Kou Dui Ju). Others called it Luo Tou Ju (Head-Dropping Carbuncle) and considered it difficult to treat. Chai Yuqing deemed it harmless. After fifty days of medication, the patient recovered. Later, another gentleman suffered from the same condition and also recovered after fifty days of medication.
Yao Yingfeng diagnosed a man with a sore on the neck seeking treatment. Yao Yingfeng said, "This is Tian She Tou Chuang (Heavenly Snake Head Sore), a result of past karma. In three years, the head will fall off naturally, leading to death." The outcome occurred exactly as predicted. (From *Renhe County Annals*)
