When suddenly falling into a coma during sleep, do not illuminate with fire, as doing so may cause death. Instead, firmly bite the calcaneus (heel) and the area around the nail of the great toe, and spit saliva onto the face; the person will revive. Another prescription for treatment:
Powdered Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus), blown into both nostrils via a tube, causes immediate awakening. This can be done within three to four days. Alternatively, insert hair into the nostrils, on the left side for males and the right for females, rotating it gently.
Another prescription: Blow air through a reed tube into both ears. Take fourteen strands of the patient's hair, twist them into a rope, and insert into the nostrils. Cut the comb of a rooster to obtain blood, and blow it into the throat via a tube; this is highly effective.
Another prescription: Powder the yellow earth from under the stove and blow it into the nose via a tube. Powdering Xionghuang (Realgar) combined with Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) and blowing it into the nose is also excellent.
Another prescription: Apply mud from the bottom of a well to the eyes. Have the person lower their head into the well while calling their name; they will awaken immediately.
Another prescription: Crush Jiucai (Chinese Chive) and blow the juice into the nostrils. In winter, dig up the roots, extract the juice, and pour it into the mouth.
Another prescription: Drink salt water, adjusting the amount according to judgment.
Another prescription: Place the patient on the ground. Use a sharp knife to draw lines on the ground starting from the shoulder, on the left side for males and the right for females. Guide the blade around the face to carve the patient's nose, penetrating one fen (approx. 3.3mm). Hold firmly without moving. The patient, seemingly possessed by spirits, will speak pleadingly. Only then ask, "Who are you? Why have you come?" They will request to leave. Then, erase the drawn line with your finger near the shoulder, allowing them to depart. It is crucial to interrogate them thoroughly.
Another prescription: Cover the patient's face with a clay steamer. Have someone strike it forcefully until it breaks; the patient will awaken.
Another prescription: Place an ox hoof or horse hoof over the person suffering from nightmare suffocation. This can also treat sudden death. A green ox hoof is particularly good.
Another prescription: Crush Xionghuang (Realgar), sieve it finely, and blow it into both nostrils via a tube. Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) is also good.
Another prescription: Blow powder of Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) into both nostrils, and also place powder under the tongue.
Another prescription: Tie the strap of a clay steamer behind the elbow, on the left side for males and the right for females, twisting it slightly tight. Bind the feet with hemp rope, then interrogate the cause and command release. Have one person guard the head and another call the patient's name from inside the room. The guardian answers "Yes," and the patient revives.
For sudden nightmare suffocation without awareness: Moxibustion at the hairy center of the big toe on the sole of the foot, twenty-one moxa cones.
For those prone to nightmare suffocation and bad dreams: Take ash from burnt-out fire, place it in shoes, and combine with pillows.
Another prescription: Wear Xionghuang (Realgar), on the left side for males and the right for females.
Another prescription: Moxibustion at the hairy center of the big toes on both feet, twenty moxa cones.
Another prescription: Place a grain of Zhen Shexiang (Moschus) the size of a mung bean near the head.
Another prescription: Using a pillow made of tiger head is especially good.
Prescription to ward off nightmare suffocation: Take Xionghuang (Realgar) the size of a jujube pit, tie it under the left armpit. This prevents nightmare suffocation for life.
Another prescription: Use Zhen Chi (True Cinnabar/Red Mineral) as a pillow.
Another prescription: Making a rhino horn pillow is good. Place Qingmuxiang (Aquilaria Agallocha Wood) in the pillow and carry it.
Another prescription: For long-standing nightmare suffocation: Write this talisman on paper, burn it until black, mix with a little water, and put into the mouth of the deceased. Hang a mirror before the ear of the deceased and strike it, calling the deceased's name. Within half a day, they will revive.
Those who suffer from nightmare suffocation and do not wake are due to the soul wandering outside and being held by evil pathogens, unable to return. Fire illumination is taboo because light prevents the soul from re-entering. Cases involving light are due to the source coming from brightness but failing to return to the body.
Attached Prescription:
From *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold): Treats ghost-induced nightmare suffocation. Use Dao Gui (a small measure) of powdered Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus) to revive the dead.
