Postpartum deficiency with cold invasion, as well as consumption of cold foods, causes cold to attack the lower abdomen leading to pain, which has been discussed previously. There are also cases where pain extends to the lower abdomen due to blood deficiency; taking Shenghua Tang (Decoction for Generating New Blood) is effective. For pain caused by blood clots, commonly known as "Ezhen Pain" (Placental Retention Pain), Shenghua Tang is also used; if ineffective, Yanhu Shenghua Tang can be used, both are suitable. Feng's method uses Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Gui (Angelica Sinensis Radix), Yimucao (Leonurus Japonicus Herba), Shan Zha (Crataegus Pinnatifida Seed), Xiang Fu (Cyperus Rotundus Rhizome), and Chen Pi (Citrus Reticulata Pericarpium) decocted and taken orally. In severe cases, Chao Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung) is added. Mizhai stated: The area below the navel is where the fetus was attached and where blood gathers. After childbirth, if lochia is not completely expelled, it forms a lower abdominal pain syndrome, characterized by stabbing pain at any time; when painful, there is a palpable mass, but after a moment the pain stops and the mass disappears. This is a blood syndrome, primarily treated with Heishen San (Black Divine Powder). However, some postpartum women experience lower abdominal pain that does not respond to Qi-moving and blood-breaking medications, with a surging and rapid pulse; this indicates that stagnant blood has ulcerated and turned into pus internally. This is due to disharmony of Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive levels), with stagnant blood; urgent treatment is required. If delayed, the stagnation will rot and turn into pus, making it extremely difficult to treat. If the toxin flows into the joints, osteomyelitis (bone abscess) occurs; failure to treat often leads to a critical condition. A rapid and surging pulse indicates pus formation; a slow and tight pulse indicates blood stasis, which can be cured by purgation. If the abdomen is distended and large, with splashing sounds upon turning, or if pus discharges from the umbilicus or through the stool, using Lafan Wan (Beeswax and Alum Pill) or Taiyi Gao (Taiyi Plaster) to discharge the pus will lead to recovery.
Yanhu Shenghua Tang treats lower abdominal Ezhen block pain.
Xiong (2 qian) Gui (4 qian, wine-washed) Tao Ren (10 kernels, skin and tip removed) Pao Jiang (Prepared Ginger) Zhi Cao (each 4 fen) Yan Hu (1 qian)
Decoct in water and take orally. Alternatively, administer 1 qian of Yanhusuo powder with Shenghua Tang; the effect is the same. It can also treat pain caused by cold qi. If there is no mass, but only lower abdominal pain that can be relieved by pressure, it belongs to deficiency; use Shenghua Tang added with Yanhusuo San, plus Shu Di (2 qian).
Yanhusuo San
Rou Gui Yanhusuo
Equal parts, ground into fine powder for use.
Lafan Wan treats all sores, carbuncles, and malignant toxins. Take this pill first to protect the interior membranes and expel toxins outward, preventing the toxin from attacking the heart. It is also suitable for injuries caused by venomous insects, snakes, or dogs.
Huang La (2 liang) Bai Fan (1 liang)
First melt the beeswax, wait until slightly cool, then add alum and mix evenly to form pills the size of small mung beans. Take 10 or 20 pills per dose. Gradually increase to 100 pills for stronger efficacy. Taking it after the sore heals is also beneficial. Another formula adds Xiong Huang (Realgar), named Xiongfan Wan, treating gu poison and snake/dog/insect bites. Beeswax is sweet and warm; alum is sour and astringent. Both can solidify membranes, protect the heart, detoxify, relieve pain, promote pus discharge, and prevent internal attack of toxic gases; thus, they are essential for various surgical conditions.
Taiyi Gao treats all internal and external carbuncles and ulcers.
Hei Shen (Scrophularia Ningpoensis Root) Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) Gui Shen (Angelica Sinensis Radix) Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) Da Huang (Rhubarb Root) Chi Shao (Red Peony Root) Sheng Di (Rehmannia Glutinosa Root) (each 2 liang)
Cut the above herbs into slices, soak in 2 jin of sesame oil. Soak for 5 days in spring, 3 days in summer, 7 days in autumn, and 10 days in winter. Boil to remove dregs, filter cleanly, and boil again.
Slowly add Huang Dan (Lead Monoxide), stirring constantly until a drop does not scatter in water. Internal carbuncles can also be taken as pills.
