Postpartum sudden depletion of Qi and Blood leads to a lack of nourishment for the entire body's sinews and bones. Consequently, symptoms such as locked jaws (mouth closed tightly) and clenched teeth often occur, along with spasms and contractures of the sinews and vessels in the hands and feet. This presents as a condition resembling Stroke (Zhong Feng), yet also resembles Epilepsy (Xian). Although there may be deficient fire floating upward accompanied by Phlegm, treatment should prioritize addressing the root deficiency. One must not stubbornly adhere to heterodox approaches using wind-dispelling and phlegm-resolving formulas, which would further damage the postpartum woman's already depleted state. When the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) blood flow is smooth, the sinews and bones naturally become strong, and joints move freely. However, due to the lack of blood nourishment and infusion after childbirth, the patient suffers from locked jaws, inability to open the mouth, and pulling/twitching of the hands and feet; these symptoms mimic Epilepsy and Stroke. Treatment should first involve administering Shenghua Tang (Life-Generating Decoction) to generate and invigorate new Blood. If critical symptoms appear, add Renshen (Ginseng Root) to tonify Qi after three doses to rescue from Blood collapse. If Phlegm and Fire are present, small amounts of Juhong (Tangerine Peel) and Chao Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, stir-fried) may be added; Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) and Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice) can also be included. However, Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) and Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) must not be used together; caution is advised. Supplementary formulas follow below.
Zirong Huoluo Tang (Nourishing Glory and Unblocking Collaterals Decoction): Treats postpartum Blood deficiency presenting with locked jaws, neck stiffness, and convulsions resembling Stroke. (If blood stasis masses are present, this formula should not be used with Dihuang [Rehmannia Root] and Baizhu [Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome].)
