If a pregnant woman fails to deliver after three or four days and the fetus has died in the uterus, the condition of the mother can be diagnosed by her lips and tongue. If both the lips and tongue are red, both mother and child are safe. If the lips are cyanotic and the tongue is red, the mother dies while the child lives. If the lips are red and the tongue is cyanotic, the mother lives while the child dies. If both the lips and tongue are cyanotic, Duoming Dan (Life-Restoring Pill) should be used as the primary treatment.
She Tui (Ophichus Skin, whole strip, calcined on an old tile until its nature remains) Yinjin Bo (Gold and Silver Foil, seven sheets each) Da Mu Dingxiang (Large Mother Clove, five qian, ground separately) Nanzi Luancha (Man's Disordered Hair, one qian, burned until carbonized) Mingming Tui (Mingming Slough, one qian, i.e., Psoraleae Fructus, burned) Heiqian (Black Lead, two qian five fen) Shuiyin (Mercury, seven fen; first melt the lead, add mercury and stir-fry rapidly until it forms sand-like granules, pour out and grind separately) Qianlima Bi (Thousand-Mile Horse Nose, i.e., seven old straw shoe noses, burned to ash)
Prepare the medicine in a quiet room; do not let women, chickens, or dogs see the process. Grind all ingredients into fine powder and mix evenly. Use pig heart blood as a binder to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Administer two pills per dose, washed down with flowing long-water.
When a parturient gives birth, if the intestine protrudes and coils outside before the fetus, and does not retract immediately after delivery, this is due to chronic Qi deficiency failing to consolidate and bind, Blood heat causing easy flow, insecurity of the Lower Yuan, and laxity of the "key" (sphincter/anal region), resulting in this distress. The method of rescue is as follows: after the fetus and placenta are expelled, have the parturient lie supine. First, wash the protruding intestine clean of any contaminants with warm water. Then, support it and gently push it back inside, pushing upwards. Have the parturient tightly clasp her legs and anus; the intestine will naturally retract. Alternatively, take forty-nine grains of Caoma (likely Ricinus Communis seed or similar local herb), remove the shells, pound them, and apply the paste to the top of the head (Baihui GV20). Once the intestine is fully retracted, remove the application immediately. This is the better method. Secondly, mix cold water with vinegar and have someone spray it onto the parturient's face; with each spray, the intestine contracts gradually. This is a secondary method. To avoid this suffering in the future, it is advisable to take Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) when not pregnant next time, adding Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit, one liang) and Guixin (Cinnamon Heart, one liang) to secure the key of the Lower Yuan. During subsequent pregnancies, consume Hulian Wan frequently.
Hulian Wan
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, one liang) Tiao Qin (Scutellariae Radix, four liang) Lianrou (Nelumbinis Semen, two liang, core removed) Sharen (Amomi Fructus, one liang, stir-fried) Zhi Gancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, one liang, ground to powder) Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, five liang)
Make pills using starch paste; swallow with rice drink. Add Renshen (Ginseng Radix) to tonify Qi. Concurrently take Sanbu Wan (Three-Substance Pill) to cool the Blood: Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) in equal parts, made into honeyed pills, taken with plain boiled water. In the eighth month of pregnancy, take Bawu Tang (Eight-Ingredient Decoction) added with Hezi (Chebulae Fructus), Qumai (Dianthi Herba), and Suké (Papaveris Pericarpium), stir-fried with honey. Take more than ten doses to prevent this condition.
