Pulverize the skin of charcoal into a fine powder, grinding it until extremely fine. If charcoal skin is unavailable, hard charcoal may also be used. Take two qian (approx. 6-10g) mixed with rice gruel broth, administered four to five times daily, continuing until the sensation of obstruction in the throat is relieved. This method is common in many households. While I was in Handong, I witnessed its miraculous efficacy with my own eyes. A scholar named Liu Hui had a neighbor's child who accidentally swallowed a copper coin; after administering this decoction, the coin was passed successfully. In recent years, there have been numerous reports of the efficacy of this formula, which are not recorded in full here.
It treats various ailments in women related to childbirth and lactation, calms the fetus and regulates Qi, postpartum blood syncope, epistaxis and blood stasis, deficiency-wasting with infertility, habitual abortion, difficult labor, fetal death in utero, retained placenta, "blood pouring" disease in women, generalized skin sores, irregular menstruation, leukorrhea (red and white discharge), malignant nodules in the breasts, cough with chills and fever, Qi attacking the four limbs, and irregularity of the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) in virgins. Regular consumption nourishes blood, improves appetite, promotes health and robustness, and facilitates conception.
Zelan San (Lycopus Decoction): Zelan (tender leaves, 9 fen), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 8 fen, crushed), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chishao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, slightly stir-fried), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, honey-fried), Bai Wuyi (Fructus Tsaoko, each 7 fen), Sheng Gan Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 6 fen), Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi, 5 fen), Nongpu (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, ginger-processed), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis), Wuzhuyu (Fructus Evodiae, stir-fried), Juanbai et Radix (Herba Siegesbeckiae et Radix, each 4 fen), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Baifuling (Sclerotium Poriae Cocos), Baiziren (Semen Biotae, each 4 fen), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, soaked in rice water overnight, sliced, bran-fried until yellow), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae, stir-fried), Ben (Rhizoma Ligustici Wallichii), Jiaohong (Pericarpium Zanthoxyli), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum, stir-fried), Wutou (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, processed), Huangqi (Radix Astragali), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae, each 3 fen), Baiwei (Radix Cynanchi Atrati), Danshen (Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, stir-fried until dry, each 2 fen). Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. On an empty stomach, take two qian mixed with hot wine. Women in my family who were emaciated and prone to illness recovered completely after taking this medicine, and many conceived children.
Hupo (Succinum), Moyao (Resina Myrrhae), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba/Rubra), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Gan Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Yanhusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, each half liang), Tu Gen (Root of unknown specific herb, literal translation: Earth Root). Grind the above ingredients into powder. Each dose is two qian, boiled in one sheng (approx. 200ml) of water until reduced to seven-tenths. Add three parts vinegar, boil briefly again, and drink hot together with the dregs. For severe conditions, efficacy will be observed after several doses.
