Treats various epileptic seizures caused by wind-pathogens, manifesting as incoherent speech, erratic running, mental trance, confused thoughts, alternating singing and crying, irregular diet, sudden collapse upon onset, foaming at the mouth, eyes rolling upward, loss of spirit and soul, where medical prohibitions yield no verified results.
Cinnabar (Shachen) (one tael, must be bright with wall-like crystalline structure), Sour Jujube Seed (Suanzaoren) (lightly stir-fried), Frankincense (Ruxiang) (bright and translucent, half a tael each).
Determine the dosage based on the patient's usual alcohol consumption. First, allow the patient to drink freely until intoxicated, but do not let them vomit. After administering the medicine in a quiet room, place them on a bed with pillows to sleep.
Combine the aforementioned medicines into one dose, mix with one cup of warm wine. Take it all at once. For those who usually drink little alcohol, simply induce intoxication according to their capacity. For mild cases, sleep for one or two days; for severe cases, three to five days, in a deep sleep without waking. Family members should watch quietly; once awake, the spirit and soul will be stabilized. Do not startle or touch them to wake them up, nor disturb them with other things. If startled awake, it cannot be treated again. Lord Wu Zhengsu of the Secretariat General, when young, suffered from heart disease. After taking one dose, he woke up after three days and was thus cured.
Earthworm (Dilong) and Spica Centradis (Gujingcao) ground into powder, mixed with Frankincense (Ruxiang). Burn on a charcoal briquette, collect the smoke using a paper tube. Inhaling the smoke through the nose brings immediate cure.
Treats muscle spasms and pulling pain that does not cease.
Prepared Aconite Root (Zizhi) (roasted until cracked, skin and umbilicus removed), Gastrodia Rhizome (Chijian/Tianma), Euphorbia Root (Loulou), Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome (Xiongnu/Chuanxiong), Sour Jujube Seed (Suanzaoren) (lightly stir-fried), Saposhnikovia Root (Haitongpi) (each one tael), Cinnamon Twig (Guixin), Acanthopanax Bark (Wujiapi).
Grind the above medicines into powder. Take one qian per dose, mixed with warm wine. Time of administration is not restricted. Taking this medicine is especially effective for red and painful eyes. Repeated use yields consistent results, as it attacks Liver Wind. All red eyes are primarily attributed to wind. I discussed this in detail in "Discourse on Four Generations Powder" (Sisheng San); the therapeutic scope of this formula also belongs to the category of Sisheng San.
Treats Kidney Wind, treats eye diseases, treats tinea.
Atractylodes Rhizome (Baifuzi) (note: use Black Aconite Root for sores on feet below), Astragalus Complanatus Fruit (Shayuanjili/Qixingcao), Notopterygium Rhizome (Qianghuo).
Equal parts of the above, raw ground into powder. Take two qian per dose, mixed with salted wine, taken on an empty stomach. Roasting inside a pig kidney before ingestion is particularly beneficial. When I served as Inspector-General of Hebei, I suffered from red eyes for over forty days. The area beside the cornea turned dark red and formed sores, causing day and night pain, unresponsive to hundred treatments. Official Qiu Ge visited and asked if my ears were itchy given the severity of my eye condition. If the ears itch, it is Kidney Wind. There is Sisheng San to treat Kidney Wind; taking two or three doses upon onset leads to recovery. Known locally as Shengsanzi, I transmitted this formula and combined its use. One dose at noon, one dose before bed, resulted in intensified eye pain initially. By the second watch (9-11 PM), I could finally sleep. Upon waking, the redness subsided slightly, and the pain ceased. After three or four more doses, I returned to normal health. At that time, Academician Sun Hefu, governing Zhenyang, heard my account and rejoiced, saying, "I know how to treat my own eyes now. I have long suffered from eye disease. I once heard Vice Minister Lu Jifu say that his previous eye disease, which did not heal for a long time, was cured after taking Tou Shui Dan." Following his advice, I prepared one dose of Tou Shui Dan. After trying two or thirty doses, my eyes healed. Thus, I learned that Tou Shui Dan also treats Kidney Wind; this is worth recording.
Regarding the taboo against bathing, one more matter should be remembered. When I had eye disease in Hebei, I had prepared bathing utensils. Lu Jun Shou, Prefect of Luo Province, visited and said, "Red eyes should not bathe; heat from the body gathers in the head and eyes, worsening the condition." Transport Commissioner Li Changqing also agreed. I did not believe it and bathed anyway. After bathing, the redness of the eyes surged dramatically. Walking several stages to Julu, I met Academician Chen Yansheng, who was confined to home due to eye disease. Asking about the cause of his eye disease, he said that years ago, after drinking and returning home, his roommate Lin Yi invited him to bathe at the Imperial Academy baths. Yansheng knew that red eyes should not bathe and firmly refused but failed. He bathed once and nearly lost his sight afterward. It took over ten years of treatment to fail to heal completely. This serves as a warning. Additionally, my disciple Mr. Xu suffered from tinea for a long time without healing. After taking Sisheng San, it was completely cleared within a few days.
