On both sides of the coccyx (original note: also known as Liji). (Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones). Mainly treats cold in the abdomen, diarrhea with watery stools, intestinal dysentery with blood in stool, chronic hemorrhoids, deficiency and exhaustion of Yang Qi, dampness and sweating in the genital area.
At each side three cun lateral to the inner margin of the neck, below the second thoracic vertebra. Moxibustion: 5 moxa cones. Take the point while sitting upright. Mainly treats back pain radiating to the chin, radiating to the head, stiffness and tension of the shoulder and back, wind-cold invading the interstices (Couli), stiffness and pain of the neck and nape, inability to turn the head, wind-lao syndrome, numbness and lack of sensation in the arms and elbows.
In the hollows at each side three cun lateral to the spine, below the third thoracic vertebra, take the point while sitting upright. Moxibustion: 7 moxa cones. Mainly treats coughing with upward rushing of Qi, cold-heat disorders of the Lung, inability to lie flat due to breathing difficulties, vomiting of frothy saliva, asthma, alternating sensations of Qi, stuffiness and weakness in the scapular region, wasting and yellowing due to overwork. Five corpse diseases and wandering miasma, stiffness of the neck and inability to turn the head.
The methods for locating points include those used by Sun Simiao, Wang Weiyi, Shi Yongzhi, Ye Shan, Pan Qi, and Monk Zhongzhi. Some use a carpenter's square or triangle, some use a basket-like measure, some sit or lie down, some stand or rise, some sit with hands raised and elbows bent, some sit with arms extended, some palpate the vertebral processes to determine height, some measure from the umbilicus, some measure from Mingmen, some mark points while sitting and perform moxibustion while sitting. Each has its advantages, but ultimately none have clearly elucidated the fundamental principles. In my usual practice using these numbers, ten out of ten attempts are successful, one hundred out of one hundred attempts are successful, without any error. When locating each point, pressing the acupoint must cause numbness in the patient's middle finger; then moxibustion will invariably be effective. The essential method lies in the hollows at each side three cun lateral to the spine, between the fourth and fifth thoracic vertebrae. This point treats all ailments. Mainly treats emaciation and deficiency, nocturnal emission, upward rushing of Qi with cough, mania and confusion. For these two points, apply 600 moxa cones per site, up to 1,000 cones. One should feel the descending Qi flowing like water, and there should be discharge; if there is no retained phlegm or chronic disease, there will be no discharge. After moxibustion, it strengthens the Yang Qi.
In the depressions at each side three cun lateral to the spine, below the fifth thoracic vertebra, take the point while sitting upright. Moxibustion: 5 moxa cones. Mainly treats shoulder pain, fullness of the chest and abdomen, chills and shivering. As well as stiffness and tension of the spine.
At each side three cun lateral to the sixth thoracic vertebra, on the inner margin of the shoulder blade, locate the point by embracing the elbow. Moxibustion: 14 to 100 moxa cones. Mainly treats warm malaria, cold malaria, shoulder and back pain, stuffiness, abdominal distension due to Qi stagnation, coldness of the shoulder and back, spasms, pain along the inner margin of the scapula, contracture of the axilla, sudden rapid pulse, hypochondriac pain, inability to sweat in febrile diseases, dizziness and epistaxis, asthma and inability to bend forward or backward, wind malaria, headache in children after eating晦 food. As well as heat in the five centers, chronic malaria that does not resolve, suffocation of Qi in the chest, wasting and deficiency due to overwork, insomnia, coughing with upward rushing of Qi.
