Chapter 24 and Chapter 25 of the *Jin Gui Yao Lue* (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet) were originally listed at the end of the volume. The text appears to be a later addition; commentators have either annotated or deleted it. However, having been transmitted for a long time, it is difficult to remove. Here, the original text is still attached as a separate section for reference.
All dietary flavors are used to nourish the body. If consumed improperly, they can become harmful. Unless one is taking medicine or practicing alchemical liquid refining, how can one avoid eating? I often see that people today do not know how to regulate their diet and lifestyle, leading to the onset of diseases. If illness does not arise from diet, but one wishes to preserve life, one must know what is strictly forbidden. The flavors of food may be suitable for certain conditions or harmful to the body. If suitable, it benefits the physique; if harmful, it causes disease. Cases resulting in danger due to this are generally difficult to treat. For methods of boiling herbs to extract juice for detoxification, although said to save emergencies, they should not be drunk hot. Various toxic conditions worsen with heat, so cold drinks should be used.
Liver disease forbids pungent flavors; Heart disease forbids salty flavors; Spleen disease forbids sour flavors; Lung disease forbids bitter flavors; Kidney disease forbids sweet flavors.
[Note] This discusses the five Zang organs having diseases and being restricted by the Five Flavors. Why? Liver belongs to Wood. If given Pungent flavor when diseased, Pungent assists Lung Qi, which might overcome Liver Wood, hence Liver disease forbids Pungent. Heart belongs to Fire. If given Salty flavor when diseased, Salty benefits Water, which might overcome Heart Fire, hence Heart disease forbids Salty. Spleen belongs to Earth. If given Sour flavor when diseased, Sour belongs to Liver, which might overcome Spleen Earth, hence Spleen disease forbids Sour. Lung belongs to Metal. If given Bitter flavor when diseased, Bitter belongs to Fire, which might overcome Lung Metal, hence Lung disease forbids Bitter. Kidney belongs to Water. If given Sweet flavor when diseased, Sweet tonifies Spleen, and Spleen overcomes Water, hence Kidney disease forbids Sweet.
In Spring, do not eat Liver; in Summer, do not eat Heart; in Autumn, do not eat Lung; in Winter, do not eat Kidney; during the four seasons' transition periods, do not eat Spleen. Explanation: In Spring, do not eat Liver because Liver Qi is prosperous and Spleen Qi is weak. Eating Liver would further tonify Liver, making Spleen weakness even more severe and incurable. Also, when Liver is prosperous, dead energy should not enter the Liver, fearing damage to the Hun (Ethereal Soul). If it is not the prosperous time, i.e., Liver is deficient, using Liver to tonify it is good. The same applies to other Zang organs.
[Note] This discusses the Four Seasons, indicating what is suitable and unsuitable to eat. For example, in Spring, Liver is prosperous and Spleen is weak, so it is suitable to eat Spleen and unsuitable to eat Liver. If Liver is eaten, Liver becomes stronger and Spleen weaker, thus "incurable." It also says: When Liver is prosperous, dead energy should not enter, which aligns with the meaning in the *Nei Jing* (Inner Canon) of "do not violate the harmony of nature." Violating this harms the Liver; since Liver governs the Hun, it fears damaging the Hun again. If not prosperous, i.e., deficient, tonifying Liver with Liver is called good. The same applies to others.
Generally, Liver should not be lightly consumed; if the animal died naturally, it is even worse.
[Note] All livestock are frightened before slaughter, causing anger in the Liver. Consuming them is unfavorable, hence "do not lightly consume." Animals that die naturally are likely poisoned, so they must not be eaten.
The Heart is the residence of the Shen (Spirit); do not eat it, as it causes karmic retribution in future lives.
[Note] Humans and animals differ, but the desire to live and fear death are the same. Since the Heart houses the Shen, it is said: "Do not eat it."
Meat and Liver that do not touch dust when dropped on the ground should not be eaten.
Pork that floats when thrown into water should not be eaten.
Any meat that is not dry, moves when roasted over fire, or moves automatically when seeing water should not be eaten.
Meat of the six domestic animals with unceasing hot blood should not be eaten.
Internal organs and fish that do not soil dust when thrown to the ground should not be eaten.
[Note] The above five points are all highly abnormal and must not be eaten.
Any meat or fish that dogs do not eat and birds do not peck should not be eaten.
[Note] Meat rejected by poultry and beasts must be poisonous and should not be eaten.
Meat containing red dots like cinnabar should not be eaten.
[Note] Cinnabar dots are accumulations of foul blood. Such discolored meat should not be eaten.
Meat resembling parents or oneself should not be eaten, as it disturbs the Shen and Hun.
[Note] This reflects the heart of benevolent and filial persons.
After eating fatty meat and hot soup, do not drink cold water.
[Note] Drinking cold water after fatty meat and hot soup causes cold and heat to clash, blocking the diaphragm. If it does not cause abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, it will certainly form stagnation and accumulation. Be extremely cautious.
Spoiled rice, putrefied meat, and smelly fish are all harmful if eaten.
[Note] Decayed and rotten things are unsuitable for consumption.
Birds and beasts that die naturally with closed mouths should not be eaten.
[Note] Naturally dead animals have toxic meat. Closed mouth means poison cannot escape outward; do not eat under any circumstances.
Six domestic animals dying naturally are usually victims of epidemics and contain toxins; do not eat them.
[Note] Epidemic toxins kill livestock; their meat contains epidemic toxins, so do not eat.
Beasts dying naturally facing north or lying prone on the ground are lethal if eaten.
[Note] Beasts dying facing north or collapsing without stiffening are highly dangerous to eat.
Eating raw meat until full and then drinking milk transforms into white worms.
[Note] Eating raw meat to satiety followed by milk/cheese creates damp-heat, leading to the generation of white worms.
Beef from cattle dying of epidemics causes severe diarrhea and hard accumulations if eaten; purgative medicines should be used to drain it.
[Note] Beef from epidemic deaths is toxic. If eaten and causing severe diarrhea, the toxin is exiting downward, or it may cause hard accumulations; use purgatives to resolve it.
Dried meat stored in rice jars becomes toxic; eating it in summer causes kidney disease.
[Note] Dried meat in rice jars absorbs damp-heat vapor. If corrupted by summer, the rotting qi enters the Kidney, causing kidney disease.
Prescription for Poisoning from Naturally Dead Livestock Meat
Grind Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) into powder. Take one Fangcun Bi (a traditional measuring spoon) and ingest.
[Note] Naturally dead livestock meat contains poison. Those poisoned should take this prescription; Bitter flavor resolves toxicity.

Prescription for Poisoning from Dried Meat Stored in Millet
Drink thick decoction of Da Dou (Soybean). Several Sheng will resolve it. It also treats Li Rou (fox meat) and Lou Fu poisoning.
[Note] Same as Yu Rou. Soybean juice also resolves toxicity.
Prescription for Poisoning from Raw Meat
Dig three Chi deep, take three Sheng of subsoil, mix with five Sheng of water, boil briefly, clarify the juice, and drink one Sheng for recovery.
[Note] Di Jiang (Earth Slurry) resolves various poisons. Digging yellow earth with seeping spring water yields Di Jiang. Three Chi is an approximate measure; only yellow earth should be used, not dirty soil.
Prescription for Poisoning from Liver of Livestock and Birds/Beasts
Soak Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean) in water, squeeze out the juice, and drink several Sheng for recovery.
[Note] Poisoning from bird/beast liver affects the Stomach; Dou Chi induces vomiting to expel the toxin.
