For patients with variola or rubeola presenting with fever but without chills, this prescription may be administered.
Xilai Ganlu Yin (Western-Style Sweet Dew Drink): It clears heat and detoxifies with miraculous efficacy. In the initial stage of fever, within five days of onset, if the fever persists, the lesions are red and purplish, there is thirst, and the stool is dry and constipated, taking this medicine will cause the lesions to become rosy and moist. It also treats irritability, dry mouth, cough, dry and rough rash, delirium, rapid breathing, and restless sleep in patients with rubeola.
[Preparation of Luffa Vine]: Three days after the Frost's Descent solar term, cut a two-foot section of the Luffa vine near the root. Boil until the juice exudes. Take one joint from the root end and insert it upside down into a new earthenware jar. Cover the top with an object to prevent dust from entering. The next day, take a good new jar, pour the juice from the inner bottle into the new jar, and re-insert the vine as before. After three days, when the juice is fully collected, seal the jar tightly for storage and use as needed.
If the patient has fever, irritability, and thirst, but no red spots have appeared yet, take one liang of Qian Gen (Radix Rubiae), decoct it in water to obtain two cups of thick juice. Mix this with two cups of Luffa Vine juice and administer orally; symptoms will subside immediately, and the eruption of variola will be mild. If the lesions have already emerged, appearing red, purplish, and dense, decoct Zi Cao (Radix Arnebiae) to make a thick liquid and mix it for oral administration; the lesions will then appear rosy and moist. If macules are mixed in, decoct Xi Jiao (Cornu Rhinocerotis), Zi Cao (Radix Arnebiae), and Qian Gen (Radix Rubiae) together for oral administration. In cold months, decoct with wine for administration. This juice is extremely effective in clearing heat and detoxifying, particularly for treating epidemic febrile diseases. A small amount of Sheng Jiang Zhi (Jing Ginger Juice) mixed with honey can be taken orally for miraculous results.
Hunyuan Zhi: This is Zi He Che (Placenta Hominis). It applies to both males and females, with that from the first pregnancy being especially excellent. Place it in a new earthenware jar, seal it tightly, cover the opening with a bowl, and bury it in the soil. Over time, it transforms into water. This is the substance. It specifically treats conditions of Qi deficiency and Blood heat, such as variola lesions that are red, purplish, dry, shriveled, or sunken and black. By using this juice to clear and tonify, the effect is immediate. For severe Qi deficiency, add Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) and Zi Cao (Radix Arnebiae), decoct them into a thick liquid, and mix for oral administration.
Chantui Gao (Cicada Slough Ointment): Chantui (Periostracum Cicadae, toxic parts removed), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Fang Feng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Jing Jie Sui (Flos Viticis Explicatae), Sheng Ma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) (all in equal proportions), plus Bai Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Alba). Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Use refined honey to form pills the size of a Chinese chestnut. Take one pill per dose, dissolving it in Bo He Tang (Mint Decoction).
Chensha San (Cinnabar Powder): Hao Chensha (Good Cinnabar, 1 qian), Si Gua (Luffa Fruit, the three inches near the stem, including seeds, burned to ash while retaining its medicinal properties; this material is excellent for promoting the eruption of variola). Grind the ingredients into powder. Administer orally mixed with honey water. It is said that excessive eruptions can be reduced, and minimal eruptions can be prevented. Alternatively, mixing with Zi Cao (Radix Arnebiae) and Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) decoction is even better.
