The Xingren Decoction (Apricot Kernel Decoction) from *Shenghui Fang* is used to treat pediatric cough with inability to produce sound.
Xingren (Apricot Kernel, *Prunus armeniaca* L.) (soaked in hot water, skin and tips removed, placed in one large cup of water, ground and filtered to extract juice, dosage: two liang) Su (Clarified Butter) Mi (Honey) (each: one he).
For the above ingredients, first place the Apricot Kernel juice in a pan, boil using a double-boiler method until the liquid reduces by half, then add Su and Mi. Boil again using a double-boiler method for twenty boiling cycles. Then, add Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb, *Fritillaria cirrhosa* D. Don) powder and Zi Wan (Aster Root, *Aster tataricus* L. f.) powder, each one fen, and Gan Cao (Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* Fisch.) powder, half a fen. Continue decocting, stirring until it reaches a viscous consistency similar to maltose syrup. Store in a porcelain vessel. For each dose, administer half a qian mixed with clear rice gruel, three times daily and once at night. Continue until the cough ceases; adjust the dosage according to the child's age and size.
Another prescription:
Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb, *Fritillaria cirrhosa* D. Don) (half a liang, roasted) Niu Huang (Calculus Bovis, *Bovis Calculus*) (finely ground, one qian) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* Fisch.) (roasted, one fen).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder through a sieve. For each dose, mix half a qian with warm water and administer, three to four times daily. Adjust dosage according to the child's age and size.
Yet another prescription:
Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber, *Ophiopogon japonicus* (L. f.) Ker-Gawl.) (remove heart, roast) Xingren (Apricot Kernel, *Prunus armeniaca* L.) (remove skin and tips, stir-fry with bran until yellow) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* Fisch.) (roasted) Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb, *Fritillaria cirrhosa* D. Don) (roasted) Kuandonghua (Coltsfoot Flower, *Tussilago farfara* L.) (each: one fen) Zi Wan (Aster Root, *Aster tataricus* L. f.) (remove soil, half a liang).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder through a sieve. For each dose, mix half a qian with milk and administer, three to four times daily. Adjust dosage according to the child's age and size, at the practitioner's discretion.
Yet another prescription:
Xingren (Apricot Kernel, *Prunus armeniaca* L.) (one liang, remove skin, tips, and twin kernels, use one medium cup of water, grind and squeeze to extract juice) Zi Wan (Aster Root, *Aster tataricus* L. f.) (half a liang, powdered).
Mix the Apricot Kernel juice with the Aster Root powder, add one he of honey, and decoct together until it forms a paste. For each dose, administer half a tea spoon mixed with clear rice gruel. Adjust dosage according to the child's age and size.
When a child suffers from Jing Feng (Convulsive Disorder), and coughing begins after the convulsions cease, this condition is termed Jing Ge Sou (Startle-Obstruction Cough). Master Mao recommends administering Xia Jin Xing Wan (Lower Metal Apricot Pill) combined with Yun Qi San (Harmonize Qi Powder).
Xia Jin Xing Wan (Lower Metal Apricot Pill):
Xingren (Apricot Kernel, *Prunus armeniaca* L.) (remove skin and tips) Tian Tingli (Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae, *Lepidium apetalum* Willd. or *Descurainia sophia* (L.) Webb ex Prantl) Han Fangji (Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae, *Stephania tetrandra* S. Moore) Madouling (Fructus Aristolochiae, *Aristolochia debilis* Sieb. et Zucc.) (remove skin).
Grind the above ingredients equally into powder, form pills using honey, sized like small beans. Administer ten pills per dose, swallowed with prepared water made from Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber, *Ophiopogon japonicus* (L. f.) Ker-Gawl.). (Master Mao also included this prescription in the previous chapter on coughs; since each has its specific indications and cannot be omitted, both are retained here.)
Yun Qi San (Harmonize Qi Powder):
Jie Geng (Platycodon Root, *Platycodon grandiflorus* (Jacq.) A. DC.) (remove rhizome, wash clean, dry, five liang) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* Fisch.) (two liang) Suo Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit, *Amomum villosum* Lour.) Xiang Fu (Cyperus Rhizome, *Cyperus rotundus* L.) (wash) Chen Ju Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel, *Citrus reticulata* Blanco) (each: one liang) Bai Jiang (White Ginger, *Zingiber officinale* Rosc.) (one fen).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Administer half a qian to one qian per dose, mixed with decoction of Shuang Mugua (Frost-dried Quince Fruit, *Chaenomeles speciosa* (Sweet) Nakai). If unavailable, use decoction of Zi Su (Perilla Leaf, *Perilla frutescens* (L.) Britt.) with salt.
