Epilepsy (Dian Bing), commonly known as "Shixin Feng" (Wind of Lost Heart), is mostly caused by depression and unfulfilled desires, leading to spiritual listlessness and boredom. It manifests as mental trance, disordered speech, and unpredictable mood swings; although it has the intent of mania, it is not as severe as true mania. Mania is an acute sudden illness, whereas epilepsy is a chronic long-term condition. Treatment should involve Xingxiang San (Star Fragrance Powder) with added Shichangpu (Acorus Tatarinowii Rhizome) and Renshen (Ginseng Root), each half qian, taken with Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) and Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice), followed by Shouxing Wan (Longevity Star Pill). Alternatively, use an emetic agent to expel phlegm-saliva first, then administer calming spirit agents. For cases caused by fright, use Bao Dan Wan (Gallbladder Embracing Pill). For cases caused by excessive thinking damaging the heart, take Tianmendong Dihuang Gao (Asparagus and Rehmannia Paste) mixed with wine, taking it for a long time to achieve efficacy. For cases with heat accumulation in the Heart Meridian, occurring irregularly with occasional irritability, feeling hot air rising from the nose and eyes, unable to control oneself, resembling Heart Wind, which subsides slightly then recurs, use Qingxin Tang (Clear Heart Decoction) with added Shichangpu. There was a case of an epilepsy patient who recovered solely by taking Siqu Tang (Four Seven Decoction). This is because phlegm confusing the mind causes epilepsy, and qi stagnation generates phlegm. Use Sichuan Zhen Chandu Jinyu (True Cicada Belly Curcuma) 7 liang, Mingfan (Alum) 3 liang, grind into fine powder, form pills like tung tree seeds with Bohe (Mint). Take 50-60 pills per dose, with any soup or water. This disease arises from the seven emotions; phlegm-saliva wraps around the heart orifices, and this medicine can remove stagnant phlegm. Sun Zhao treated Monk Chong of Xiangguo Temple, who suddenly suffered from epilepsy for half a year, with no effect from famous doctors. Sun Zhao said: Give him all salty foods available, wait until he feels thirsty, then come to get medicine. He will sleep tonight and recover tomorrow night. That night, the monk indeed felt thirsty. Sun Zhao gave him one cup of wine, mixed with medicine, and after a while, another half cup. The monk slept for two days and nights, waking up as if nothing had happened. The monk thanked him and asked about the treatment method. Sun Zhao said: Others can only calm the spirit but cannot induce sleep through spiritual confusion. This is the Zhusha Suanzaoren Rushen San (Cinnabar, Sour Jujube Seed, and Frankincense Powder) from Lingyuan Fang, which people fail to use properly. Chen Liangfu treated a woman who saw ghosts, spoke abnormally, picked at clothes, stared fixedly, and did not respond to heart-calming medicines. He administered Yangzheng Dan (Nourish Righteousness Pill) twice, taken with decocted Rusheng Tang (Frankincense Decoction), assisted by Sansheng Yin (Three Lives Drink), resulting in immediate recovery. Hua Borun treated a monk who became manic and delirious, seeing everyone as ghosts. His pulse was clustered like coix seeds, rapid and forceful. He said: This is due to Yangming Stomach Excess. The Suwen states: The Yangming meridian governs the interior, and its channels have abundant blood and qi. In severe cases, patients discard clothes, climb high, jump over walls, and curse wildly. Thus, he used Sanhua Tang (Three Transformations Decoction) to purge three or four times, followed by fire therapy, resulting in recovery. A courtesan suffered from inner distress, singing madly, crying bitterly, exposing herself, cursing wildly, staring blankly, and remaining silent. Her pulse was deep, firm, and knotted. He said: This resulted from sorrow, anger, and depression, where food and phlegm accumulated in the chest. Emetic therapy expelled accumulated phlegm and clotted blood. Fire therapy was then used to clear the upper diaphragm, leading to recovery. Another person, while eating, sat down, grabbed ash from the stove, mixed it with rice, ate it fiercely, and muttered curses. When supported by attendants and pulsed, the pulse was wiry and straight, running up and down, especially floating and slippery at the left Cun Kou (Radial Artery at the wrist). This is a syndrome of wind-phlegm lingering in the Pericardium. The method should be to purge phlegm to consolidate the spirit. After purging four or five sheng of phlegm foam, the patient fell into a deep sleep. Upon waking the next day, the illness was gone. Gradually regulate with spirit-calming agents until normal. If the pulse fluctuates between large and small, present and absent, suddenly six positions beat four times per breath normally, then suddenly appear like bird pecking, leaking roof, shrimp swimming, or fish playing, these are signs of demonic influence. Acupuncture and moxibustion are suitable. Bian Que said: For diseases caused by hundred evils, there are thirteen acupuncture points. Generally, needling starts from Guigong (Ghost Palace), then Guixin (Ghost Trust), then Guilei (Ghost Rampart), then Guixin (Ghost Heart), finally must needle together, stopping at five or six points is sufficient. If it is the essence of evil demons, they will speak themselves, discussing their origins, verifying past events, immediately obtaining proof of the evil spirit, requiring full life-seeking removal treatment. Men start needling from the left side, women from the right side. If speaking nowhere, needle all points. Follow the mantra/methods; acupuncture and moxibustion are suitable for primary treatment, strictly following the law ensures success. The Yellow Emperor's palm formula is a secret technique of practitioners, binding ghosts, prohibiting劫 (plunder), Five Mountains and Four Rivers, mountain spirits and ghosts, all prohibited, located in the ten finger joints of both hands. Fire needle 7 moxa cones, 3 times.) Thirteenth needle 1 cun on the tongue, at the lower seam of the middle of the tongue, pierce through the tongue, named Guifeng. Place a board across the mouth corners first, needle the head to prevent tongue movement. Previously, if hands and feet were opposite, needle two points. If isolated points, needle singly. Qin Chengzu's Ghost Moxibustion Method: Bind the patient's two thumbs together with thin hemp rope, apply large moxa cones straddling the seam. Ignite at the nails and the fleshy angles of both fingers, four places. If one place does not ignite, it is ineffective. Moxa 7 cones for miraculous effect.
