Erhuo San (Two Actives Powder)
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Wuyao (Linderae Radix), Chishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Gancao Jie (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma - node part), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) (each 4.5 qian), Honghua (Carthami Flos), Sumu (Sappan Lignum), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), Gange (Puerariae Radix) (each 3 qian), Tanxiang (Santalum Album Lignum) (2 qian).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with decoction of Xiancao (Acanthopanacis Senticosi Caulis) for administration.
Duoming Dan (Life-Restoring Pill)
Indications: Ding chuang (furuncle/boil with toxic heat) presenting with nausea, and various malignant sores.
Chansu (Bufo Toxin, dried, 0.5 qian, dissolved in wine), Zhusha (Cinnabar, water-triturated, 3 qian), Qingfen (Calomelas, 0.5 fen), Kufan (Alumen Exsiccatum), Hanshui Shi (Calcitum, water-triturated, each 1 qian), Tonglv (Chalcanthum, 1 zi), Shexiang (Moschus, 1 zi), Haiyang (Helix Aspersa/Mollusc, 20 pieces, ground; optional but effective).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Grind Haiyang separately into a paste, mix with the medicinal powder, and form pills the size of mung beans. If difficult to form, add good wine to aid binding. For mild cases, take 1-2 pills; for severe cases, take 3 pills. If ineffective, repeat dosage. When taking the pill, chew a large mouthful of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) until very soft, place it in the palm, wrap the pill inside the scallion, and swallow with hot wine. Lie down in a warm place; sweating indicates efficacy. Avoid ice water. In Xue's prescription, Tonglv, Shexiang, Moyao (Myrrhae Resina), and Ruxiang (Olibanum Resina) are each 1 qian.
Hunhun Dan (Resurrection Pill) [From *Ruizhu*]
Indications: Thirteen types of Ding chuang (furuncles).
Zhusha (Cinnabar), Danfan (Chalcanthum) (each 1.5 liang), Xuexie (Sappan Lignum), Tonglv (Chalcanthum), Woniu (Helix Aspersa, raw), Xionghuang (Realgar), Kubai Fan (Alumen Exsiccatum) (each 1 liang), Qingfen (Calomelas), Moyao (Myrrhae Resina), Chansu (Bufo Toxin) (each 0.5 liang), Shexiang (Moschus, a small amount).
First, grind Woniu and Chansu until smooth. Grind the remaining medicines into a fine powder, mix thoroughly, and form pills the size of a chicken egg. Take one pill per dose. Have the patient first chew 3 cun of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) and spit it into the palm. Wrap the pill in the scallion and swallow with one cup of hot wine. After walking approximately five li, if sweating occurs, the disease will resolve. If unable to chew scallion, grinding it into a paste to wrap the pill is also highly effective.
Another Hunhun Dan
The *Classic* states: "Sweating leads to healing of sores." This medicine must be used to induce sweating.
Ruxiang (Olibanum Resina), Moyao (Myrrhae Resina), Chen Sha (Cinnabar), Xionghuang (Realgar) (each 1.5 qian), Qingfen (Calomelas), Pian Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum), Shexiang (Moschus) (each 0.5 fen), Haiyang (Helix Aspersa, quantity not fixed), Chansu (Bufo Toxin), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), Fencao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Pengsha (Borax) (each 1 qian).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Use Haiyang paste as a binder to form pills. If difficult to form, add a little wine and wheat flour paste. Form pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill per dose, along with 2-3 raw scallion heads, chewed finely and swallowed. For Ding zhong (furuncles) and Yong zhong (abscesses) where toxic qi has entered the diaphragm, slight sweating resolves the condition. Another formula adds Tonglv, Hanshui Shi, Qingfen, and Kufan, each 1 qian.
Feilong Shouming Dan (Flying Dragon Life-Saving Pill)
Indications: Ding chuang (furuncles), Fabei (back carbuncle), Naoju (brain abscess/carbuncle), Rupengju (breast abscess), Fusujü (osteomyelitis/deep-seated abscess), all headless swelling toxins, and malignant sores. Administration causes headless swellings to develop a head; painless swellings become painful; established abscesses heal immediately. This is a supreme treasure among medicines for malignant conditions. For critical patients, it brings immediate improvement, with no risk of failure. This is a family secret recipe, useful for a lifetime, not to be lightly disclosed. Its effects are swift and immediate.
Qingfen (Calomelas), Naizi (Borneolum Syntheticum, optional), Shexiang (Moschus) (each 0.5 qian), Xuexie (Sappan Lignum), Danfan (Chalcanthum), Hanshui Shi (Calcitum) (each 1 qian), Chansu (Bufo Toxin, dried, dissolved in wine), Ruxiang (Olibanum Resina), Moyao (Myrrhae Resina), Zhusha (Cinnabar, used as coating), Tonglv (Chalcanthum) (each 2 qian), Xionghuang (Realgar, 3 qian), Woniu (Helix Aspersa, 21 pieces, optional), Wugong (Centipedae Corpus, 1 piece, wine-fried until yellow, remove head and feet).
Grind all into a fine powder. First, grind Haiyang (with shell) into a paste, mix with the other medicines, and form pills the size of mung beans. If difficult to form, use wine-dissolved flour paste. Take two pills per dose. First, chew 3 cun of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) until soft and spit into the palm (left hand for males, right hand for females). Wrap the pill in the scallion and swallow with 3-4 cups of clear hot wine. Cover with clothes in a wind-free place. After walking for about five li, drink several more cups of hot wine to boost the medicinal power. The goal is fever and profuse sweating.
If taken at the initial stage, two pills will eliminate the condition. If no sweat occurs and the case is severe, take another two pills; sweating indicates efficacy. For severe cases lasting 3-5 days, take two more pills to cure. If Ding chuang zouhuang (systemic toxicity from furuncle) has passed the heart, it is difficult to treat. Cold sweat indicates death. If the patient cannot chew scallion, crush it and wrap the pill inside, swallowing with hot wine. Sores on the upper body should be treated after meals; sores on the lower body before meals. After taking this medicine, avoid cold water, cucumber, eggplant, oil, pork, chicken, fish, meat, wet dough, and all foods that trigger wind or worsen sores/toxins. Also avoid contact with women's laundry and fox odor. This medicine is infallible and has saved many lives.
Zouma Fuyan Dan (Horse-Rushing Banquet Pill)
Indications: Ding chuang (furuncles).
Moyao (Myrrhae Resina), Ruxiang (Olibanum Resina), Pengsha (Borax), Sha (Mineral salt/mineral drug), Xionghuang (Realgar), Qingfen (Calomelas) (each 3 qian), Pian Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum, 1 fen), Shexiang (Moschus, a small amount).
Grind into a fine powder, mix with Chansu juice to form pills the size of millet grains. Take one pill per dose, washed down with warm wine.
Jiusheng Dan (Life-Saving Pill)
Indications: Various types of Ding chuang, eyes appearing to emit firelight, coma/unconsciousness.
Collect Sangye (Mori Folium) and Jingye (Schizonepetae Herba) on a Chen day in the third lunar month. Pierce with bamboo needles, wrap in paper, seal, and dry in shade. On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, grind into a fine powder. Mix with Chansu juice to form pills the size of adzuki beans. At time of use, grind one pill together with Xionghuang (Realgar) into fine powder. Place on the tongue; sweating indicates efficacy.
The above formulas, including Duoming Dan and Hunhun Dan, all contain detoxifying herbs such as Chansu (Bufo Toxin), Xionghuang (Realgar), and Zhusha (Cinnabar), rather than being primarily diaphoretic agents. However, they can induce sweating because they drive out toxic qi, which exits the body through the couli (skin pores and interstices) as sweat.
