In the past, Chu Cheng of Qi prepared this special formula for nuns, widows, and barren women, which was likely purposeful. These two groups are widowed, possessing only Yin without Yang; when desire arises but is often unfulfilled, Yin and Yang contend, resulting in alternating chills and fever, resembling Wen Nue (Warm Malaria); if prolonged, it becomes Lao (Consumption). I once read in the *Records of the Grand Historian · Biography of Cang Gong* that Han Nu, a handmaid of King Jibei, suffered from lower back pain with alternating chills and fever. All physicians considered it a disease of chills and fever. Cang Gong said: The disease arose from desiring a man but being unable to obtain one. How do I know this? By diagnosing her pulse, the Liver pulse was wiry and extended beyond the Cun position, thus I knew the cause. Generally, men prioritize Jing (Essence), while women prioritize Blood. When men's Jing is abundant, they desire sexual intercourse; when women's Blood is abundant, they conceive pregnancy, because the Liver stores Blood. If the Jueyin Liver pulse is wiry and extends beyond the Cun position, and even reaches up to the Yuji area, it indicates abundant Yin Blood. Therefore, Chu Cheng's words are indeed well-founded. (The aforementioned Dihuang Pills, although named "Suppress Yin," are actually formulas that tonify Yin and drain Yang.)
