Indicated for sores in the lower body and rectal prolapse.
Tao Hongjing stated: This is the earth from the east wall of a house; one should take the easternmost part of the east wall, where sunlight falls first, and scrape it for use. It can also treat infant wind-umbilicus (infantile tetanus involving the umbilicus), and can remove oil stains from clothes, being superior to calcined alum and talcum powder. The *Xinxiu Bencao* notes: Rubbing this earth on dry or moist tinea is extremely effective. Ministers Yu Xi et al. verified in the *Yaoxing Lun*: Dongbi Tu (East Wall Earth) can also be used alone. Its nature is neutral. Scrape into fine powder, sift, and apply to the eyes to remove nebulae. Additionally, one shell's worth of finely powdered Dongbi Tu applied externally treats variola (smallpox) and is indicated for warm malaria. Ri Huazi stated: Dongbi Tu is warm and non-toxic. Chen Zangqi stated: Good quality earth has a sweet taste, is neutral, and non-toxic. It indicates for diarrhea and dysentery, cold-heat red-and-white dysentery, heat-toxin knotting pain in the abdomen, and bloody stool. Take dry earth from deep underground, boil in water for three to five boils, filter off the dregs, adjust to appropriate thickness, and drink two sheng while warm. It can also resolve various drug poisonings, including meat poison, pepper poison, and wild mushroom poison. Using Dongbi Tu yields similar efficacy. Its primary function is to stop diarrhea and dysentery and relieve the restlessness of cholera. One should select earth from sun-facing walls that has been dried for a long time. Zhang Sikong stated: Earth above three chi is called manure; below three chi is called earth. Ingesting it helps expel upper malignant substances; do not allow dirty water to enter. For those poisoned by eating beef, horse meat, or their livers, first cut hair to one cun length, mix with good earth to make two sheng of thick mud, mix and drink; soon all hair will emerge along with the ingested toxic liver. The solitary liver of cattle and horses contains severe poison and must not be eaten. Emperor Wu of Han stated: Wencheng died after eating horse liver. Also, for sudden onset of heart pain, draw five characters on the ground, scoop up the central earth, mix with one sheng of water, squeeze out the juice, and ingest for good effect. It is also said that Tuxiao (a mineral drug) is very cold, non-toxic, and indicates for cold damage and seasonal epidemics, jaundice, and irritability/heat; pour boiling water over it to extract the juice and ingest at once. The *Zhuangzi* states: The pellets rolled by dung beetles are this substance. Hidden in the soil, dug up from the ground, perfectly round as if molded by human hands; the older, the better. It is also said that Tubinglang (Earth Areca Nut) indicates for malignant sores, insect bites, scrofula, and scabies; grind finely and apply with oil. It resembles an areca nut and is found in earth holes and between steps. Fresh ones are still soft, said to be toad excrement. Since toads eat hundreds of insects, they are particularly effective for malignant sores.
The *Tujing Bencao* details are under the entry for Calcined Alum.
The *Waitai Miyao*: To treat protruding anus, grind one sheng of Dongbi Tu finely; take three stalks of Gleditsia sinensis (Chinese Honeylocust Fruit), each one chi two cun long; use the wall earth powder to dust the anus. For the protruding head, apply heated Gleditsia sinensis alternately with moxibustion/warming until healed. The *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*: For overdose of medication and poisoning, causing extreme restlessness and near-death sensation. Scrape Dongbi Tu, mix with one or two sheng of water, stir and drink. Empirical Formula: To treat back carbuncles and furuncles. Use Dongbi Tu exposed to smoke for many years and Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai) in equal parts, pound and sieve into powder; mix with ginger juice to form a paste, spread and apply. Additionally, swallow one qian bi of powder mixed with Mugwort fragrans (Maoxiang) decoction; the effect is wonderful. The *Zimu Milu* formula for treating infant umbilical wind sores that have not healed for years: Apply Dongbi Tu externally.
The *Yanyi* refers to the entry for Longgu Feigan (Dragon's Liver) for Dongbi Tu.
