(Anxi Xiang) The texture is also flexible and tough (pronounced like "ren"). (Note added first in *Tang Bencao*)
The Anxi Xiang tree originates from the Kingdom of Persia, where it is called Bixie Shu (Tree that wards off evil spirits). It grows three zhang tall, with yellow-black bark. The leaves have four angles and do not wither even after enduring cold. It flowers in February; the flowers are yellow with a slightly greenish center, and it does not bear fruit. By carving its bark, the resin flows out like maltose syrup, named Anxi Xiang (Benzoin). It is collected in June and July when the resin solidifies. Burning it can communicate with spirits and ward off various evils. Ri Huazi states it treats diseases caused by evil qi such as hallucinations or ghostly manifestations, ghost fetus blood stasis, and蛊毒 (gu poison); it tonifies Kidney Qi, treats Huoluan (cholera-like disorder), Fengtong (wind-pain), and treats women's blood jing (blood stagnation/spasm) and postpartum blood vertigo.
*Haiyao* section records: According to *Guangzhou Ji*: It is produced in the South Sea Kingdom of Persia, being the resin within the tree, resembling peach gum, harvested in autumn. Another prescription states: For women who dream of sexual intercourse with ghosts at night, mix Chouhuang (Stink Yellow) into pills, burn them in a Danyue (cinnabar cave) for fumigation, which can permanently cure this condition. It also treats nocturnal emission in men, warms the Kidneys, and dispels evil qi.
(Xianren Zhang) For pediatric Jingxian (convulsions/epilepsy) and night crying, using it as a sleeping companion is effective. It also treats hemorrhoids; burnt to powder, take one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure). This refers to bamboo shoots that die standing just before becoming mature bamboo; the color is black as lacquer, harvested in May and June. Ku Gui Zhu (Bitter Cinnamon Bamboo) often grows this type of bamboo.
There is another variety of Xianren Zhang, with a sweet taste, slightly warm nature, and non-toxic. Long-term consumption promotes longevity, strengthens bones and tendons, and prevents aging. Consumed as cooked food, it removes phlegm accumulation and dispels wind-cold. It grows in the plains and marshes of Jiannan. The leaves resemble bitter lettuce (Lactuca serriola), growing in clusters. Chen Zi'ang wrote in his *Preface to Guan Yu Pian*: In the fourth month of summer, stationed at Hezhou of Zhangye, among the grass and trees there were no other anomalies; all were Xianren Zhang. They often grow in clusters. My family has consumed it for generations; I previously ingested it, and during this journey, I encountered it again. It calms the mind regarding this flavor.
*Tujing* states: See the entry under Gouqi (Lycium Fruit) for text.
(Songluo) As a decoction for inducing vomiting, it promotes water passage. Also known as Nuluo. It grows on pine trees in the valleys of Mount Xiong'er. Harvested in May, dried in the shade.
Tao Hongjing stated: There are many in Dongshan, growing on miscellaneous trees, but those growing on pine trees are authentic. *Mao Shi* (Book of Songs) says: Niao (vine) and Nuluo attach themselves to pine trees. Niao is a parasitic plant; those growing on mulberry trees are considered authentic, not those on pines. Here they share similarities. Currently, detailed examination of the *Classic* states: Songluo should be sourced from pine trees. Minister Yuxi et al. carefully reviewed *Yaoxing Lun* stating: Songluo serves as an envoy herb, with bitter and pungent tastes, and slightly hot nature. It can treat chills and fever, expel guest phlegm-saliva from the chest, remove...
