(Changhou Fish) The flavor is sweet, the nature is neutral, and it is non-toxic. The roe inside its abdomen is toxic; consuming it causes dysentery with diarrhea. Eating its flesh makes one robust, strong, and boosts energy. It is produced in the South Sea, resembling a crucian carp, with a perfectly round body and no hard bones. It is extremely delicious when roasted. It is also known as Changshu (Rat).
(Ni Fish / Giant Salamander) It is non-toxic. It primarily treats throat obstruction (Hou Bi) and Feishi (a traditional disease concept referring to sudden, wandering ailments). Take its gallbladder, mix it with warm water, and ingest it. (Huan Fish) Pronounced "Huan," it resembles a carp and lives in rivers and lakes; after ingestion, it can expel Feishi. Its gallbladder is extremely bitter.
(Huyi Fish / Chen Fish) It has high toxicity. Upon entering the mouth, it causes tongue necrosis; upon entering the abdomen, it causes intestinal necrosis. Its flesh has slight toxicity. People also consume it, but when boiling, it must not be placed near the cauldron directly; instead, it should be suspended by an object for cooking. It is also named Huyi Fish. When touched by an object, it becomes angry and inflates its abdomen like a balloon, hence also called Chen Fish (Angry Fish). Its belly is white, and there is a red equatorial band on its back resembling the eyes of Yin Fish that can close, differing from other fish. It exists in both rivers and seas; those in the sea are highly toxic, while those in rivers are moderately toxic. If people attempt to collect its liver and roe to poison others, they risk being bitten themselves; therefore, these methods are generally not recorded. Only Olive Wood (Ganlan Mu) and Yuming Wood (Yuming Mu) can detoxify it; secondarily, Reed Root (Lugen) or Aconite Grass Root juice can be used. This type of toxin is beyond the reach of ordinary medicines. Olive and Yuming have already been listed in the Woody Plants section.
(Tiger-headed Fish-like Species) It is toxic. Its dorsal spines sting like snake bites. Its skin is covered with spines, and its head resembles a tiger's. It is produced in the South Sea, and there are legends that it can transform into a tiger.
(Qiu Fish etc.) Pronounced "Gong." Kunzi, Qiu Fish (Qiu sounds the same), Shuwei Fish, Diqing Fish, Pi Fish (Pi pronounced as 'Pu Hu Fan'), Shaoyang Fish. Among these, those with spines on their tails that cause injury are highly toxic. Being pierced by three spines leads to death; two spines cause debilitation; one spine can be treated and saved. If nailed where people urinate, it causes swelling and pain in the genitals. When removing the spine from the tail, use the tail to push away obstacles. Eat the flesh after removing the spines. Regarding Pi Fish, it has already been annotated in the Eel entry of *Shennong Bencao Jing*.
Annotation on Manti (Eel): Tao Hongjing stated: Manti can climb trees. Su Gong stated: Ni Fish can climb trees, not Manti. Examination shows: Ni Fish, also known as Wangwei, can climb trees in mountain streams. During droughts, it carries water in its mouth up the mountain, covers itself with leaves, and captures birds that come to drink. In the Yifang region, it is called Ni Fish. It is also named Pi Fish and Renyu (Human Fish). Its fat burns as a candle without extinguishing and was used in the tomb of Qin Shi Huang. Tao Hongjing's annotation on the Pi Fish entry states: Renyu is indeed Ni Fish.
