For warts (skin growths), rub the affected area with a dead person's pillow twenty-one times until the wart rots and falls off. There was once an old woman suffering from stagnation of cold-dampness, which had not healed for years. Xu Sibai diagnosed her and said, "This is Shizhu disease (a chronic consumptive disease caused by ghostly qi). It will only be cured by decocting and taking a dead person's pillow." Thus, he went to an ancient tomb to retrieve a pillow, which was already rotted and missing one side. After the woman took it, she recovered immediately. Zhang Jingnian, at fifteen years old, suffered from abdominal distension and yellow complexion, which could not be treated by various medicines. He asked Xu Sibai for advice. Xu Sibai said, "This is Shihui disease (a condition where roundworms harden like stones), which is extremely difficult to treat. You must take a decoction of a dead person's pillow." Consequently, five or six sheng (a unit of volume) of large, stone-hard roundworms were expelled, and the illness was cured. Shen Sengyi suffered from eye pain and frequently saw ghosts. Xu Sibai said, "Evil qi has entered the Liver. You can find a dead person's pillow, decoct it, and take it." Finally, the pillow was buried back in its original place. Following his instructions, he recovered again. Wang Yan asked, "These three diseases are different, yet all were cured using a dead person's pillow. Why?" The answer was: "Shizhu disease is caused by ghostly qi, which lies dormant without manifesting fully, causing lethargy and stagnation. Treating it with a dead person's pillow causes the soul's qi to fly away and no longer attach to the body, so Shizhu heals itself. Shihui disease results from medical errors forming accumulations, causing roundworms to harden; ordinary worldly medicines cannot expel them, so one must rely on the power of 'ghostly things' to disperse them. Hence, decocting and taking a dead person's pillow is required. Evil qi entering the Liver causes eye pain and visions of monsters. One needs evil substances to hook them out. Therefore, the qi of the dead person's pillow is used. Since the evil qi does not leave, the pillow is buried among the tombs."
