[Juechuang (Stemona Root)]
Salty in flavor, cold in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats pain in the waist and spine, inability to lie on a bed, difficulty in bending forward or extending backward, clears heat, and can be used as a decoction for bathing. Grows in valleys and fields of Hanzhong.
The *Tang Bencao* annotation states: This herb resembles Xiangru (Elsholtzia splendens), with long and large leaves, sometimes fine like Ren (Perilla frutescens). It grows in marshes, cultivated fields near roadsides, and is highly effective in treating blood distension and qi rebellion. It also treats whip wounds; applying its juice leads to immediate healing. Commonly known as Chiyan Laomu Cao (Red-eyed Old Mother Grass). Current annotations from other editions state that people now call it Xiangsu.
[Jingzhong Tai Ji Ping (Moss and Duckweed in Wells) & Jingzhong Lan (Isatis Leaf grown in Wells)]
Great cold in nature. Treats lacquer dermatitis, heat sores, and edema. Jingzhong Lan (Isatis Leaf grown in wells) neutralizes poisons from Yege (Gelsemium elegans), Badou (Croton tiglium), and other toxic substances.
Tao Hongjing stated: Abandoned wells often contain moss, duckweed, and weeds/vegetable Isatis growing among bricks and soil. Since they possess detoxifying properties, those growing in wells are superior. There should not be a separate species named "Jingzhong Lan." Mud at the bottom of wells is extremely cold and also treats scalds and burns. Jinghua Shui (well water drawn at dawn) is also used in preparation methods for ingested refined medicines. Ministers Yu Xi et al., carefully according to the *Shu Ben*, recorded: Moss and duckweed in wells have a bitter taste. Rihua Zi stated: Non-toxic.
The text of the *Tu Jing* is included under the entry for Haizao (Sargassum).
[Maoxiang Hua (Flower of Cyperus aromaticus)]
Bitter in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. Treats Zhong'e (sudden illness caused by foul miasma), warms the stomach to stop vomiting, and treats cold pain in the heart and abdomen. Its seedlings and leaves can be boiled into a bath decoction to ward off evil qi and make the body fragrant. Grows in various prefectures of Jiannan Dao. Its stems and leaves are dark brownish-black, and flowers are white; this is not Baimao Xiang (White Sedge Flower). (Currently appended)
Ministers Yu Xi et al., carefully according to Chen Cangqi, stated: Maoxiang has a sweet flavor and neutral nature. It grows in Annan and resembles Maogen (Rhizoma Imperatae). Rihua Zi stated: The flower of Baimao Xiang inserted into the nostrils treats ulcers that fail to heal after prolonged moxibustion, as well as knife and arrow wounds, stopping bleeding and pain. Decoction stops hematemesis and epistaxis.
The *Tu Jing* states: Maoxiang Hua grows in various prefectures of Jiannan Dao; it is now also found in Shaanxi, Hedong, and Jidong prefectures. Seedlings emerge in March, resembling barley. White flowers bloom in May, though some have yellow flowers. Some produce seeds, others do not. Roots are harvested in January and February, flowers in May, and seedlings in August. Those with dark brownish-black stems and leaves and white flowers are named Baimao Xiang.
Chen Cangqi stated: Baimao Xiang has a sweet flavor, neutral nature, and is non-toxic. It treats malignant qi, making the body fragrant. Boiled and consumed, it treats internal cold pain. It grows in Annan, resembling Maogen, and is used for bathing.
Haiyao stated: According to the *Guang Zhi*: It grows in the mountains and valleys of Guangnan, has a sweet flavor, neutral nature, and is non-toxic. It treats generalized sores in children; boiling it with peach leaves for bathing, combined with various precious aromatics, is very miraculous and superior to imported goods.
The *Zhou Hou Fang*: To treat Re Lin (hot strangury). Take four jin of Baimaogen, chop it, boil in one dan five sheng of water until reduced to five sheng. Cool it, then drink it while warm. Take three times daily. Another prescription: For bamboo or wood splinters stuck in flesh. Burn Baimaogen to ash, mix with fat/grease, and apply externally. It also treats swelling caused by wind.
The *Yanyi* states: Mao grass has white flowers and roots like sedge, but bright, clean, and long. All parts can be used for bath decoctions; using them together with Bencao is particularly good. It is still incorporated into Yinxiang (Indian incense), combined with Xiang Fuzi (Aconitum carmichaelii lateral root prepared with aromatics).
