[Actinidia chinensis (Kiwi Fruit)]
Taste: Sour, sweet. Nature: Cold. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Stops sudden thirst, resolves irritability and heat; however, it may chill the Spleen and Stomach, induce diarrhea, and cause constipation. It suppresses the toxicity of Dan Shi (mineral drugs) and promotes the passage of urinary calculi. For regurgitation caused by heat obstruction, take the juice mixed with fresh ginger juice. Also known as Teng Li, Mu Zi, or Mi Hou Li. Grows in mountain valleys. The vine climbs trees; leaves are round and hairy. The fruit is egg-sized, with brown skin, becoming sweet and edible only after frost. Branches and leaves kill parasites; boiled juice fed to dogs treats skin diseases. (Added now)
Chen Cangqi states: Taste: Salty. Nature: Warm. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Mainly treats bone-joint wind, paralysis and weakness, premature graying of hair, hemorrhoids caused by wild chicken meat, regulates the middle Jiao, and directs rebellious Qi downward. The peel can be used for papermaking; the juice from the vine is very slippery, promotes the passage of urinary calculi, and treats stomach closure. Taking the juice mixed with fresh ginger juice is beneficial. For dietary therapy, harvest when ripe, extract the pulp, mix with honey, and decoct; consumption brings a cooling sensation and stops Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst).
Yan Yi says: Actinidia chinensis is abundant in the southern mountains of Yongxing Army. Eating it resolves excess heat, but excessive consumption causes coldness in the viscera and diarrhea. It ripens fully in the tenth lunar month, appearing pale green; unripe fruits are extremely sour. Seeds are numerous and fine, resembling mustard seeds. Vines are tender, growing two to three zhang high, often climbing on trees. Survivors exist along paths in shallow mountains.
[Pinus koraiensis (Korean Pine Nut)]
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Slightly warm. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Mainly treats bone-joint wind, dizziness, removes necrotic tissue, [note: text says "changes to white", likely contextually referring to anti-aging or specific effects], disperses fluid accumulation, moistens the Five Zang organs, and relieves hunger. Grows in Silla. Resembles small chestnuts, triangular in shape; the kernel is fragrant and delicious. People of Dongyi eat it as fruit; it differs from pine nuts in Central China. (Added now)
Minister Yu Xi et al., according to Ri Hua Zi: Pine nuts expel wind-bi and cold pathogens, treat deficiency emaciation and shortness of breath, tonify insufficiency, moisten the skin, and nourish the Five Zang organs. People in the East use them as a substitute for hemp paste food.
Hai Yao Ben Cao states: After removing the shell, it is eaten; it is very fragrant and delicious, differing from Yunnan pine nuts. Yunnan pine nuts resemble Croton seed (Ba Dou), have a weak taste, and excessive consumption causes fever and toxicity. Pine nuts, taste sweet and delicious, nature greatly warm, non-toxic. Mainly treats various wind pathogens, warms the Stomach and Intestines. Long-term consumption lightens the body, prolongs life, and prevents aging. Its taste resembles that of Piante Ren (Peach Kernel) from Bizhan Country; the efficacy of the kernel is identical.
