Yingzisu (Papaver somniferum)
Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats conditions triggered by the ingestion of mineral drugs (Dan Shi), loss of appetite, and can be boiled with Bamboo Sap (Zhuli) to make porridge, which is extremely delicious. Also known as Xianggu, Minoang, or Yumi. The flowers are red and white, resembling arrowheads (pronounced "xiao"), containing grains inside, also called Nangzi (added later).
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully cite Chen Cangqi: Songyangzi stated that Yingzisu has four leaves per flower, with light red halos.
The Compendium of Materia Medica Illustrated states: Yingzisu was not originally recorded regarding its place of origin; now it grows everywhere, and many households plant it in their gardens for decoration. There are two varieties of flowers, red and white, with a slightly fishy odor. Its fruit resembles a bottle, shaped like an arrowhead (pronounced "xiao"), containing very fine grains. It is difficult to cultivate. Gardeners must fertilize the land from the previous year and sow seeds in September; otherwise, if this is not done, most seeds will not sprout, and those that do will not thrive. Harvest when the fruits turn dry and yellow. It mainly promotes the circulation of wind-qi, expels pathogenic heat, treats regurgitation (Fanwei), phlegm in the chest, and conditions triggered by mineral drugs. It is said that combining it with Bamboo Sap to make porridge yields excellent results. However, its nature is cold and it promotes urination and bowel movements through the large and small intestines; thus, it should not be consumed in excess, as overconsumption may disturb Qi in the Bladder. The *Southern Tang Food Physician's Prescriptions* uses it to treat regurgitation and inability to eat. Method for Papaver Porridge: Take 2 he of white Papaver grains, 3 qian of powdered Ginseng Root (Renshen), and a 5-cun long raw Chinese Yam (Shanyao), finely chopped and ground. Boil these three ingredients in 1 sheng 2 he of water until reduced to 6 he of liquid. Add ginger juice and salt to taste. It can be taken at any time of day or night, and does not interfere with taking decoctions or pills separately.
*Er Yi* states: Yingzisu flowers may also have multiple layers of petals. One capsule contains tens of millions of seeds, the size of Thlaspi Seeds (Tinglizi), white in color. Planting after a year's interval is better. Grind the seeds, decoct with water, add honey to make Papaver Decoction (Yingsu Tang), which is very suitable for those ingesting mineral drugs.
These are excerpts from the eleven additional items recorded by Chen Cangqi.
Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats the sensation of satiety without hunger and lightens the body. It originates from islands in the East Sea, resembles barley, matures in autumn, and is also named Yu Yuliang, but it is not the residual grain of stone.
Marine Drugs: Its fruit is ball-shaped, harvested in August. It is a common food item there. It primarily tonifies deficiency, emaciation, and depletion, warms the stomach and intestines, and stops vomiting and counterflow qi. Long-term consumption strengthens the person. Also known as Rangu. Chinese people have never seen it.
