Lagengzi (Lagengzi, Semen Hyoscyami)
Bitter and sweet in flavor, cold in nature, toxic. It primarily treats toothache with expulsion of parasites, muscle bi (numbness and paralysis) with stiffness and spasm, enables vigorous walking, causes hallucinations of seeing ghosts, treats epilepsy and wind-phlegm convulsions, and alleviates inverted spasms and contractures. Excessive consumption leads to manic running. Long-term use makes the body light, enables running as fast as a galloping horse, strengthens willpower and physical strength, and promotes spiritual clarity. Also known as Hengtang or Xingtang. Grows in coastal valleys and Yongzhou region. Seeds are harvested in May.
Tao Hongjing states: It is now found everywhere. The seeds resemble the pits of Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) but are extremely small. It is only used in formulas for treating mania and madness; it seems this is because one should not consume it in excess.
Long-term use has no contraindications, promoting spiritual clarity and vigorous movement, which is a great benefit, yet it is not seen used in "Xianjing" (Immortal Classics). Currently, physicians often refer to it as Yelangdu (Wild Wolf Poison). According to Chen Cangqi's Bencao: Lagengzi treats pi accumulation (masses), calms the mind and stabilizes the spirit, brightens the eyes and ears, dispels evil and expels wind, turns hair white, and has a warm rather than cold nature. Take the seeds, wash and sun-dry them. On alternate days, take on an empty stomach with water, crushing between fingers without breaking the seed; breaking it may cause madness. Alternatively, soak in urine until the seeds exude juice, then dry completely after the urine evaporates, and administer according to the previous method. Ministers Yu Xi et al. note according to Shuben Tujing: Leaves resemble Wangbuliuxing (Vaccariae Semen) and Songlan (Isatidis Radix). Stems and leaves have fine hairs, flowers are white, seed shells are urn-shaped, fruits are flat and thin, about the size of millet grains, yellowish-green. Found everywhere. Harvested in June and July, dried in the sun. "Yaoxing Lun" states: Lageng can be used alone, bitter and pungent, slightly hot, highly toxic. Raw form can induce hallucinations of seeing ghosts and manic confusion when picking needles. Stir-fried until hot, it stops cold dysentery, treats toothache and dental cavities; chewing the seeds expels worms. Boil with Duan Shi (Calcined Oolite) clear liquid for one shichen (two hours), scoop out, remove sprouts, and sun-dry. Form pills with Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), and Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex). It removes all cold qi and treats chronic qi-dysentery, being very warming. For heat-induced toxicity, Lu Dou Zhi (Mung Bean Juice) resolves it. Charred and ground into fine powder, it treats lower body rectal prolapse.
Ri Huazi states: Warm in nature, toxic. Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shengma ( Cimicifugae Rhizoma), and Xijiao (Rhino Ceratis Cornu) can all resolve its toxicity. Burning and fumigating treats toothache and washing treats genital sweating.
"Tujing" states: Lagengzi grows in coastal valleys and Yongzhou, now found everywhere. Seedlings and stems are two to three chi high. Leaves resemble Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Wangbuliuxing, and Honglan (Carthami Flos), about three fingers wide. Flowers in April, purple. Seedlings, pods, and stems have white hairs. Bears fruit in May, with urn-shaped shells like small pomegranates. Inner seeds are very fine, bluish-white, like rice grains. Also known as Tianxianzi (Hyoscyamus niger). Harvest seeds in May, dry in shade. Note according to "Benjing": Lageng is cold in nature, later people often say it is greatly hot. But "Shiji · Chunyu Yi Zhuan" states: The concubine of King of Zichuan was pregnant but could not deliver. Chunyu Yi gave her a pinch of Langdang medicine, drunk with wine, and she delivered immediately. Could inability to deliver be treated with hot medicines? Furthermore, ancient formulas for sudden mania and madness often use Lageng alone; one wonders if it is indeed cold in nature? "Duanju" records a formula for treating mania and madness: Take three sheng of Lageng, grind into powder, soak in one sheng of wine for several days, take out and pound, mix with the previous juice, strain off dregs, and simmer over soup until pillable. Make pills the size of small beans, three pills daily. One should feel tightness in the mouth and face, sensation of insects crawling in the head, and red spots on the forehead and limbs; these are signs of recovery. It is unknown if further administration yields divine efficacy. Also "Qiezhong Fang": Treats Changfeng (intestinal wind). Lageng Jian: Take one sheng of Lageng fruits, process them. Sun-dry, pound and sieve, mix with half a jin of fresh ginger juice, combine in a silver pot, add two sheng of unadulterated wine, simmer over fire until thick like syrup, adding wine gradually until about five sheng are used, then stop simmering. Make pills the size of Wuzi (Cocculus trilobus seeds). Swallow three pills with wine every morning, increasing to five or seven pills. If pills stick to hands, use Tusifen (Cuscutae Semen powder) as a barrier. Carefully avoid strong fire during simmering, otherwise the medicine will scorch and lose efficacy. Initial intake may cause slight heat, do not be surprised. In severe cases, after more than three days of intake, diarrhea should occur. When the disease leaves, diarrhea also stops. Extremely effective.
Lei Gong states: When using, do not allow Cangmingzi to be mixed in. Its shape is similar, but ineffective when taken; many people currently use it to adulterate. Cangmingzi is slightly reddish. If processing ten liang, boil with one yi of first-run vinegar until vinegar is exhausted. Then soak in yellow cow milk overnight. By morning, if the cow milk turns black, it is Lagengzi, highly toxic. Sun-dry, pound separately, and sieve heavily for use. Do not mistakenly ingest; it rushes to the heart causing great restlessness and generates Yanhuo (eye inflammation). "Bieshuo" notes: Regarding the efficacy of Lageng, I have not seen what is described, but its toxicity is severe; even after boiling for one or two days, sprouts only then appear. Users should exercise caution.
