(Curcuma zedoaria)
Curcuma zedoaria (Zedoary)
Bitter, pungent, warm, non-toxic. Primarily treats heart and abdominal pain, sudden severe discomfort or evil qi (sudden severe discomfort or evil qi), cold qi of cholera, vomiting of sour fluid, detoxification; taken with wine after grinding. Also treats blood and qi disorders in women, and ben tun (ben tun, a condition characterized by the sensation of gas rising from the lower abdomen to the chest and throat) in men. Grows in Xirong and various prefectures of Guangnan.
The fruit resembles dried mulberries, the leaves resemble lotus leaves, and the rhizome grows beneath the root system together. There are good and bad varieties; the bad ones are toxic. People in Xirong collect it by first letting sheep eat it; if the sheep refuse to eat it, they discard it. (Added now) Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully cite Chen Cangqi: One name is Peng'e, black in color; another name is [missing character], yellow in color; a third name is Bosha, sweet in taste, highly toxic. *Yaoxing Lun* states: Zedoary can also be used alone. It can treat blood and qi heartache in women, break up mass and cold qi, and is effective when ground with wine and vinegar for administration. Ri Huazi states: It works well with wine and vinegar. It treats all types of qi stagnation, opens the stomach, aids digestion, regulates menstruation, resolves blood stasis, stops pain and bleeding from trauma, and internal injury with bad blood. This is the rhizome of turmeric found in the south.
*Tujing* states: Zedoary grows in Xirong and various prefectures of Guangnan; it is now also found in Jiangzhe. Seedlings emerge in March in fields. The stem is as thick as a copper coin, two to three chi high. The leaves are greenish-white, one to two chi long, about five cun wide, resembling lotus leaves. In May, flowers appear in spikes, yellow with slightly purple tips. The root resembles ginger, but the rhizome is beneath the root, like a chicken or duck egg, varying in size. Harvested in September, the coarse skin is peeled off, steamed until cooked, then sun-dried for use. This substance is extremely hard and difficult to crush; when preparing for use, bake it thoroughly in hot ashes, then while still hot, place it in a mortar and pound it until it breaks into powder. It is not seen in ancient prescriptions. Current physicians state: Lei Gong says: For preparation, grind it completely with vinegar in a sand bowl, then dry it near fire, sift repeatedly before use. *Shiquan Bojiu Fang* treats pediatric qi hernia and pain. Pao-processed Zedoary, pounded into powder while hot, one da qian taken with hot wine. Sun Yonghe's Zhengyuan San treats interrupted qi flow and shortness of breath, also verified for combined use. Zedoary one liang, Jinlingzi (fruit of *Chimonobambusa utilis*) pitted one liang, both ground into powder, add borax, taken on an empty stomach.
