Beizi (Concha Arcae)
Salty in flavor, neutral in nature, and toxic. It primarily treats leukoma (opacification of the cornea), Guizhu (a type of infectious tuberculosis-like disease), Guduh (poison caused by gu magic), abdominal pain with bloody stool, Wulong (five types of urinary retention), promotes urination, eliminates chills and fever associated with Wendu (warm malarial fevers), releases the muscle layer, and dissipates clustered heat. It is best used after calcination. Also known as Beichi. It is produced in the ponds and marshes of the East Sea.
Tao Hongjing stated: This refers to the small shells currently used by people to decorate military uniforms and other items, which are produced in the South Sea. When calcined into a fine powder and blown into the eyes, it effectively treats leukoma. Additionally, true Dai Mao (Hawksbill Turtle Shell) crushed into powder can also treat blindness due to leukoma. Ministers Yuxi and others noted according to the *Shu Ben Tu Jing*: It belongs to the snail family, resembles fish in shape, and those with white teeth are of good quality. The *Yao Xing Lun* records: Beizi acts as an envoy drug. It can break up Wulin (five types of strangury), promote urination, and treat hyperthermia caused by Shanghan (cold damage). Rihua Zi stated: Beichi is cooling. It treats leukoma barriers, Guduh, Guiqi (ghost qi), and bloody stool. It is also known as Baibei.
The *Tu Jing* records: Beizi is produced in the ponds and marshes of the East Sea, and is now also found in the South Sea. It is the smallest of the shellfish, resembling a snail in shape. However, the *Jiaozhou Ji* states: Large Beizi is produced in Rinan, shaped like a wine cup; small Beizi is Beichi. It is effective in treating toxins, all possessing purple hues. They are white and clean like fish teeth, hence the name Beichi. Ancient people used them to decorate military uniforms and clothing; nowadays they are rarely used, except for threading them for children's play. Some households use them to decorate mirror straps, and painters sometimes use them to press materials. There is no fixed time for collection. Ke (Dai Mao/Hawksbill) is similar but larger, yellowish-black in color, with white bones that can be used to decorate horses.
The *Hai Yao Ben Cao* records: It is extremely abundant in Yunnan and is used as currency for exchange. It primarily treats edema due to water qi, as well as Ganshi (corrosion caused by pediatric malnutrition syndrome) and vomiting of milk in children. All should be calcined before being added to medicinal preparations. Lei Gong stated: When using, do not use flower insect shells, as their properties are similar but they are ineffective when used. When preparing, first weigh bitter wine (vinegar) and honey equally, mix the two, then steam the Beichi in the wine and honey mixture. Take it out, wash it thoroughly in clear wine, and grind it for use. The *Shenghui Fang* treats toxicity from She Wang (aconite poison) mixed in meat and from Lou Fu Du (poison from dampened bread). Use Beizi powder, mixed with water and taken orally (half qian dose), which is effective. If poisoned by eating noodles, the same method applies. The *Qianjin Fang* treats black flower leukoma in children, causing astringency and pain. Use one liang of Beichi, calcined to ash, ground like flour, add a small amount of Longnao (Borneol), and apply to the eye for excellent results. Another prescription: To remove leukoma. Take ten Beizi, calcine to ash and sift finely, take an amount the size of a broad bean, place it on the leukoma, lie down for the time it takes to cook one shi of rice, and the leukoma will disappear. For pterygium or polyps, add Zhenzhu (Pearl) in equal proportion to Beizi. Sun Simiao treated food poisoning by taking one Beizi, holding it in the mouth, which induces spontaneous vomiting.
The *Yanyi* states: Beizi is now called Beichi, resembling Zi Bei (Purple Conch), but longer than one cun, hence the name Beizi. The color is slightly white, with some being dark purple-black. It treats leukoma in the eyes and is used after calcination. People in the North use it to decorate felt hats, attach to clothes, or make Diexie (pendant ornaments hanging from belts).
