**Polygalae Radix (as the Sovereign Herb)**
Bitter in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats cough with counterflow qi and damage to the middle jiao, tonifies deficiencies, expels pathogenic factors, unblocks the nine orifices, enhances intelligence, improves hearing and vision, strengthens memory, stabilizes willpower, increases strength, benefits men, calms heart qi, stops palpitations and fright, nourishes essence, removes stagnant qi under the heart and diaphragm, clears heat in the skin, and treats yellowing of the face and eyes. Long-term use makes the body light, prevents aging, improves complexion, and prolongs life. The leaves are called *Xiaocao* (Small Grass), which primarily treat nourishing essence, tonifying yin qi, stopping deficiency damage, and treating nocturnal emission. Also known as *Jiwan*, *Rao*, and *Xicao*. Grows in the valleys of Mount Tai and Yuanju. Roots and leaves are harvested in the fourth lunar month and dried in the shade. (It works well when combined with Poria (*Fuling*), Malva Seed (*Dongkuizi*), and Dragon Bone (*Longgu*); it neutralizes the toxicity of Aconitum Lateralis Preparata Root (*Tianxiong*) and Aconitum Carmiichaelii Preparated Root (*Fuzi*); it is incompatible with Pearl (*Zhenzhu*), Veratrum (*Lilu*), Cockroach (*Feilian*), and possibly Lily Bulb (*Qige/Baihe*).)
Tao Hongjing stated: According to pharmaceutical nomenclature, there is no "Qige." It is likely "Baihe" (Lily Bulb). Yuanju County belongs to Jiyin Commandery, Yanzhou Prefecture; currently, it is still sourced from Lanling north of Pengcheng. When used, the core must be removed, and only the bark is taken. Currently, one jin of raw material yields only three liang of bark, whereas market specimens may have increased quantities artificially. *Xiaocao* resembles *Ephedrae Herba* (Mahuang) but is green. Polygalae Radix is also used in immortal prescriptions.
The *Tang Bencao* annotation states: The lower volume of *Yaolu* contains "Qige," meaning Qige originally existed, so it cannot be said to be absent. Tao's current claim that it might be Baihe is incorrect. Current annotation: The stems and leaves of Polygalae Radix resemble *Isatidis Folium* (Daqingye) but are smaller. Compared to Mahuang, Tao did not recognize it. Minister Yuxi et al. carefully followed the *Erya*: Rao is Jiwan. Annotation: This is the current Polygalae Radix, resembling Mahuang, with red flowers, sharp yellowish-green leaves; the upper part is called Xiaocao.
The *Yaoxing Lun* states: Polygalae Radix is incompatible with *Scolopendra* (Qicao). It treats mental forgetfulness, calms the soul and spirit, prevents confusion, strengthens yang function, and treats dream-evil. Rihuazi stated: It treats diaphragmatic qi, fright and nightmares, promotes muscle growth, assists sinews and bones, treats women's blood spasm and aphonia, and pediatric external evil invasion. There are no contraindications for its use.
The *Tujing* states: Polygalae Radix grows in the valleys of Mount Tai and Yuanju; it is now also found in prefectures of He, Shaanxi, and Jingxi. The root is yellow and shaped like Artemisia roots. The sprout is named Xiaocao, resembling Mahuang but green, or like Vicia seeds. Leaves also resemble Daqingye but are smaller. It blooms white flowers in the third lunar month; roots can grow up to one chi long. Roots and leaves are harvested in the fourth lunar month and dried in the shade; now it is said to be sun-dried. Specimens from Sizhou have red flowers, and both roots and leaves are larger than elsewhere. Those from Shangzhou have black roots. Folk tradition holds that Polygalae Radix from Yimen is the best. Ancient formulas generally used both Polygalae Radix and Xiaocao. Modern physicians mostly use Polygalae Radix and rarely use Xiaocao. The *Gujin Luyan* and *Fanwang Fang* treat chest bi pain, counterflow qi, and inability to swallow fluids in the diaphragm using Xiaocao Wan. Ingredients include Xiaocao, Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin), Zanthoxyli Pericarpium (Shujiao) wiped of sweat, Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin) each 3 fen, and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) 2 fen, processed. These six herbs are pounded together, sifted, and mixed with honey to form pills the size of a wu zi. Take three pills with rice juice before meals, three times a day. If ineffective, slightly increase the dose until effective. Avoid pork, cold water, raw scallions, and vegetables.
Leigong said: When using Polygalae Radix, one must first remove the core. If not removed, ingestion causes chest stuffiness. After removing the core, soak it overnight in cooked Licorice Decoction, drain, and dry in the sun before use. The *Zhouhou Fang*: Treats heart orifice obstruction, excessive forgetfulness, and errors. On a Dingyou day, secretly buy Polygalae Radix at the market, place it in the corner of a headscarf, grind into powder, and take orally without letting others know. Baopuzi's *Neipian* states: Lingyang Zhongzi took Polygalae Radix for twenty years, had thirty-seven sons, and could read books and remember everything without forgetting.
