Nature: Neutral, slightly toxic. Indications: Treats heart pain due to blood and qi disorders in women; used for metal wounds to stop bleeding; brightens the eyes; removes red polyps on the skin. Green patina forms on all raw copper; this green substance is the essence of copper, specifically the green layer found on copper vessels. The variety from Beiting is considered the best. For treating eye conditions, it must be washed thoroughly before use. (Newly supplemented content recorded by Chen Cangqi and Ri Huaizi.)
Chen Cangqi stated: Tao Hongjing believed that bronze should not be used in prescriptions. However, I observe that bronze can brighten the eyes, remove red skin polyps, treat metal wounds, stop bleeding, does not rot when submerged in water, and causes wounds to turn greenish-black. Both raw and refined copper develop a green surface layer, which constitutes the essence of copper. Larger granules are called Kongqing (Hollow Malachite), while smaller ones are called Konglv. Tongqing (Copper Green) specifically refers only to the green substance formed on the surface of copper vessels.
Empirical Formula: For treating excessive phlegm-fluid retention and sudden stroke with aphasia, offering great emergency efficacy. Bilin Dan (Jade-Like Pill): Take 2 liang of raw Lvshi (Green Alum), wash it clean, grind it finely in a mortar, dissolve it in water, filter out insoluble residues to clarify, and then slowly boil the mixture with the alum powder until dry. The preparation should be conducted at the Chen hour (7-9 AM) on a Chen day, facing the Chen direction. Grind uniformly again, add 1 fen of Shexiang (Musk), and mix well. Bind with rice flour paste into pills the size of a bullet, and dry in the shade. For stroke patients, divide one pill into two doses, grinding each dose with Bohe Jiu (Mint Wine) for administration. For paralysis, flaccidity, and all wind syndromes, dissolve the pill in Zhusha Jiu (Cinnabar Wine) and administer. Wait for the patient to expectorate phlegm; if the phlegm is greenish-blue and foul matter is purged, it indicates efficacy. Another Formula: Xia'er Lüyun Dan (Infant Green Cloud Pill): Dosage is not fixed. Grind finely into powder, bind with vinegar-flour paste into pills the size of a chicken head. For any infant suffering from this condition, administer one pill ground in Mint Wine as soon as symptoms appear. Vomiting will occur shortly after; the expelled phlegm will be gelatinous. Assist by manually extracting it. This method is highly effective after vomiting ceases.
(Jingdi Sha / Mud from the Bottom of a Well) Nature: Extremely cold. Main indications: Treats scalds and burns.
Qianjin Fang (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold): For scorpion stings. Apply mud from the bottom of a well to the affected area; replace it when it warms up. Zhouhou Fang (Prescriptions Kept in the Sleeve for Emergencies): For sudden unconsciousness during sleep. Do not illuminate with fire, as exposure to light may cause death. Instead, bite firmly at the heel and the edge of the big toenail, and spit saliva onto the face frequently to revive the patient. After applying well-bottom mud to the eyes, have the person hang their head into the well and call their name to restore consciousness. Another Formula: To protect the fetus when a pregnant woman contracts seasonal epidemic diseases, apply mud from the bottom of a well to the epigastrium (below the heart).
