It is indicated for correcting the off-flavor of soy sauce. At that time, taking one or two sheng [a unit of volume] of soy sauce and placing it in a jar will restore its original flavor.
It is indicated for various wind pathogens causing tendon and bone contraction, as well as skin numbness and bi-syndrome (painful obstruction syndrome), inability to move hands and feet, absence of eyebrows and hair, scabies, tinea, and other diseases located in the skin and joints; these can be treated by herbal bathing. After bathing and drying, the body may feel extremely weak and exhausted; medicinal supplements and food should be provided according to the condition. Unless there are other illnesses, it is not advisable to bathe lightly. It is also said: if sulfur is present in the water, the water becomes hot. Sulfur is indicated for various sores and ulcers, and water is suitable for this purpose as well. If the water has the odor of sulfur, it should be considered superior for treating various cold-wind conditions. In places with abundant heat, it can be used in large quantities for pigs and sheep.
The taste is sweet, the nature is greatly cold, and it is non-toxic. It is indicated for dispelling heat, irritability, and fever; it is used for hot compresses to treat swelling caused by the eruption of mineral drugs (shi-yao). During the intense heat of summer, consuming this substance contradicts the climate and is therefore unsuitable for humans; it may cause cold and heat to clash in the abdomen, leading to various diseases. The *Shipu* (Food Recipes) states: "Whenever ice is used in summer, it should only be used to shield food and drink, keeping the air cool. It must not be crushed and eaten. Although it provides temporary relief at the moment, long-term consumption leads to disease." Currently, ice wells are dug in the western lands, and the ice is distributed to officials and ministers, who should all understand this. The *Huainanzi* also describes methods for making ice. Ice made from freezing stone (ning-shui-shi) is not true ice.
The taste is sweet, the nature is cold, and it is non-toxic. It is indicated for improving vision, calming the mind, relieving pediatric heat and irritability, and quenching thirst. Fangzhu (Fangzhu, 方诸) is a type of large clam. When placed facing the moon, it collects three or two he [a unit of volume] of water, similar to morning dew. Yangsui (Yangsui, 阳燧) faces the sun, while Fangzhu faces the moon; both can attract fire and water. The *Zhouli* (Rites of Zhou) records that Fangzhu catches water under the moonlight, hence the name Fangzhu. Ming-shui (Ming Shui, 明水) used in Chen Zhuan as Xuanjiu (Xuan Jiu, 玄酒) refers to this kind of water.
The taste is sweet, the nature is warm, and it is non-toxic. Long-term consumption makes people robust and strong, increases appetite, keeps the body moist and prevents aging. Its efficacy is similar to that of milk. People living near the "Ru-xue" (Ru Xue, 乳穴) spring collect this water for cooking and brewing wine, which is highly beneficial. The thicker water weighs more than other waters when weighed. Salt flowers appear on the surface when boiled; this is the true Ru-ye (Ru Ye, 乳液). The mention of fish in the cave comes from the section on Fish.
The nature is neutral, and it is non-toxic. It is indicated for thirst. When traveling far in mountains without water, mix Ku-gualou (Ku Gualou, 苦栝蒌) into pills. Take twenty pills early in the morning, and you will never suffer from thirst again. It can also be added to veterinary poisons for wild animals. Mixed with Yelangdu (Ye Langdu, 野狼毒), Gaojiao (Gao Jiao, 皂荚), and Fanshi (Fan Shi, 矾石) into a powder, apply it to the leftover meat eaten by wild beasts. This should prevent them from feeling thirsty; if they feel thirsty, they might drink water and dissolve the medicine. It is named Shuimo (Shuo Mo, 水沫). In the middle of rivers and seas, long-standing foam condenses into Rushi (Ru Shi, 乳石); thus, the water foam resembling stone but remaining soft is what is referred to here.
