Salty in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Primarily nourishes Kidney Qi (Kidney Energy), strengthens Yin essence, treats erosive sores of the genitalia, stops intestinal diarrhea and dysentery, and treats mouth ulcers and sore throat. Long-term consumption benefits Qi, prevents hunger, and prolongs life. Also known as Shi Nie (Stone Coal) or Shi Mo (Graphite). Produced in Yangcheng, Chuan. No specific time for harvesting.
Tao Hongjing states: These five types of Stone Grease are similar to those described in the *Shennong Bencao Jing* (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica), and their therapeutic effects are also comparable. The entries in the *Bielu* (Additional Records) are recorded here in full. Currently, only Red Stone Greage (Haliotidis Cortex / Halloysitum Rubrum) and White Stone Grease (Halloysitum Album) are commonly used by the public. The *Xianjing* (Scriptures of Immortals) also uses White Stone Grease to coat cinnabar furnaces. High-quality varieties come from Wujun and share the same origin as Red Stone Grease. Red Stone Grease is mostly red with good color; it can only be used to stop diarrhea but cannot be used in the Five-Mineral Powder (Wushi San). High-quality varieties also come from Wuling, Jianping, and Yiyang. Currently, the Five-Mineral Powder uses those from Yiyang, produced eighty li east of the boundary of KT County. They resemble pig brain in shape and are bright red and lovely in color. They regenerate after harvesting but cannot stop dysentery, so they are not used. The other three types of Stone Grease exist but have no fixed usage; Black Stone Grease can only be used for painting.
The *Tangben Zhu* (Commentary on Tang Materia Medica) states: Yiyang is Shenzhou. The variety produced there is called Taohua Shi (Peach Blossom Stone), which is not one of the Five-Color Stones. Its color resembles peach blossoms; long-term consumption makes people fat. Locals also use it to treat dysentery. It was formerly produced in large quantities in the mountains of Suzhou and Yuhang, but is no longer collected.
Chen Yuxi et al., according to Wu Shi: The Five-Color Stone Greases are also known as Qing Fu (Blue Talisman), Chi Fu (Red Talisman), Huang Fu (Yellow Talisman), Bai Fu (White Talisman), and Hei Fu (Black Talisman).
Qing Fu: Shennong says sweet; Leigong says sour, non-toxic; Tongjun says pungent, non-toxic; Li Shi says slightly cold. Grows in Nanshan or sea cliffs. No specific time for harvesting.
Chi Fu: Shennong and Leigong say sweet; Huangdi and Bianque say non-toxic; Li Shi says slightly cold. Grows in Shaoshi Mountain or Taishan. Color is crimson, slippery like grease.
Huang Fu: Ji Shi says slightly cold; Leigong says bitter. Grows in Songshan. Color resembles pig brain or gosling down. No specific time for harvesting.

Ri Hua Zi states: The Five-Color Stone Greases are all warm in nature and non-toxic. They are incompatible with Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) and Rhe palmatae Radix (Dahuang). They treat diarrhea and dysentery, metrorrhagia and leukorrhea, hematemesis and epistaxis. They also astringe essence, treat strangury, calm the mind, stabilize the Zang-organs, eliminate irritability, treat palpitations due to fright, discharge pus, treat carbuncles, furuncles, and hemorrhoids, nourish Spleen Qi, strengthen sinews and bones, and tonify deficiency and damage. Long-term consumption beautifies the complexion, resulting in fine texture; those that adhere to the lips are considered superior.
