The meridian of the Hand-Taiyang (Small Intestine) enters the interior of the ear. In children, if wind pathogen affects the head and brain, the wind invades and attacks the meridian, striking against the Qi, thus causing tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Consequently, the pathogenic factor strikes against the healthy Qi; over time, the pathogen stagnates, eventually leading to deafness.
Tinnitus and pain caused by wind traction in children arise from wind gradually infiltrating. These conditions originate from wind pathogen in the head and brain; when the wind enters the meridians and agitates with the Qi, it triggers traction pain. As the wind gradually penetrates and strikes the healthy Qi, if the condition is mild, the agitation is subtle, resulting only in tinnitus. If the wind arrives suddenly and violently, and the healthy Qi is strong, their mutual striking is rapid and urgent, causing traction pain. If this is not halted, the wind will not dissipate, body fluids will accumulate, and heat will exacerbate the condition, producing yellow discharge; in severe cases, it may lead to otorrhea (pus discharge from the ear).
The ear is the gathering point of numerous meridians and the pathway through which Kidney Qi communicates. Children have vigorous Kidney Qi; if there is internal heat, the heat rushes upward to the ear, causing body fluids to accumulate and knot, thereby generating pus. Alternatively, during bathing, water may enter the ear and not be completely drained. The retained water-dampness accumulates, combats the Blood and Qi, and generates heat, also leading to pus discharge. These are collectively referred to as ear diseases (likely implying otitis or similar suppurative conditions); if they persist without healing, they transform into deafness.
Liver Qi communicates with the eyes. Internal heat lodged within the Zang-Fu organs combats with phlegm-fluids in the chest and diaphragm, steaming and soaking the Liver. The resulting Liver heat rushes upward to manifest in the eyes, causing redness and pain.
The eyes are the essence of the Zang-Fu organs, the external manifestation of the Liver, and the site where Liver Qi communicates. Phlegm-heat in the Zang-Fu organs of children steams and soaks the Liver, rushing upward to affect the eyes. Initially, there is only heat and pain; as the heat accumulates, it transforms into visual obstructions (cataracts or corneal opacities). With mild heat, only white opacities form and aggregate; small ones resemble millet grains, large ones resemble hemp seeds or beans. Depending on severity, mild cases produce a single opacity, while severe cases may produce two or three.
If no opacity forms but a white membrane develops, the disease is extremely severe. The white membrane covers the black pupil (cornea) entirely, turning the whole eye white, leading to blindness. This obstruction varies in severity: in mild cases, a thin white membrane appears at the edge of the black pupil, encroaching upon it and spreading diffusely. If not treated urgently, the heat intensifies, and the entire eye becomes covered with white obstructions.
