In individuals whose innate constitution presents an imbalance of Yin and Yang, causing obstruction of the Heart Spirit (Shen), or those whose mental clarity and vitality become dull due to illness, all stem from a deficiency of Yin and Yang Qi, resulting in unclear consciousness.
Blood in the body circulates with Qi and typically does not stagnate or accumulate. However, if trauma such as falling causes injury, blood flow loses its normal regulation and stagnates at the site of injury. If it flows into the abdominal cavity, it accumulates without dispersing, forming Blood Stasis (Yu Xue). Whenever Blood Stasis exists internally, the complexion appears sallow, respiration is slightly panting, there is a sensation of slight chills, mild heat, or occasional pain.
When a child's Zang-Fu Qi is disharmonious and Blood Deficiency allows Cold Pathogens to invade, the lips turn cyanotic. Alternatively, if Zang-Fu Qi is hot, sores may form on the lips; when Wind-Cold invades, although the sores heal, the blood color fails to recover, leading to cyanotic lips.
If a child presents with a sallow complexion, straight hair, intermittent high fever, poor nutritional absorption from food intake, and eventually dies after prolonged duration, this condition is termed "Wugu" (Gu Innocence Disease). It is said that a bird named "Wugu" resides in the sky, hiding by day and roaming by night. If children's clothes and mats are washed and left exposed overnight, this bird flies over them. Giving these clothes to the child to wear and these mats for the child to sleep on causes the child to contract this disease.
Wind-Heat Toxic Wastes lodge in the Cou Li (skin texture and intermuscular spaces). Heat-Toxin contends with Blood and Qi, evaporating outwardly. The skin becomes hot and red, resembling applied cinnabar, hence termed Dan (Erysipelas/Carbuncle). If unresolved for a long time, muscles may rot and be damaged.
The Five-Color Dan changes unpredictably upon onset, appearing in green, yellow, white, black, or red. This results from Wind-Toxin Heat fluctuating between excess and deficiency, alternating between Cold and Heat, thus manifesting as Five-Color Dan.
Dan disease originates from Toxic Heat obstructing Blood and Qi, causing steaming and reddening of the color. When Cold Qi invades, Cold and Heat interact and mutually accumulate stasis, maintaining a red hue.
Initially, Dan Fire involves Heat-Toxin accompanying Wind, where Heat contends with Blood, accumulating and evaporating to cause redness. If the Heat is mild but Wind is predominant, the color appears slightly white.
The manifestation of Dan Fire involves redness erupting like burning fire, followed quickly by blister formation.
When Dan erupts across the entire body, presenting as macular erythema resembling burning fire, it is called Tian Huo Dan (Heavenly Fire Erysipelas).
