When a patient has newly recovered from Shanghan (Cold Damage disease) but is less than one hundred days post-illness, and their physical strength has not yet returned to normal, engaging in sexual intercourse will almost invariably result in death. There are cases where, sixty days after recovery, the individual is physically capable of walking, shooting arrows, and hunting, yet engages in sexual activity; such persons will vomit saliva and die. Although the illness is said to have resolved, if Qi and Blood have not yet stabilized, sexual intercourse must be avoided. Otherwise, there will inevitably be acute pain in the lower abdomen and spasmodic curling of the hands and feet, leading to death within two shichen (four hours). The *Fang Wang Fang* records: Gu Zixian, formerly a District Inspector, had recovered from his illness but was not yet fully robust. He sought pulse diagnosis from Hua Fu. Hua Fu stated, "Although you have recovered, your body remains deficient, and Qi and Blood have not stabilized. Your Yang Qi is insufficient. Do not engage in strenuous activities. Other forms of exertion may be tolerated, but sexual exertion (Nü Lao) will lead to death." Upon dying, the tongue would protrude several inches. Gu's wife, hearing of his recovery, traveled over a hundred li to visit him. After staying for several nights, they engaged in intercourse, and he died three days later. For women suffering from Shanghan, even if recovered for less than one hundred days, if Qi, Blood, Marrow, and Bone are not yet solid and substantial, engaging in sexual intercourse for pleasure may not cause immediate discomfort. However, after a few days, it causes the joints to feel loose and separated, the meridians to become slack and weak, Qi and Blood to become deficient, and Marrow to become empty. This results in mental confusion, faint breathing, lack of energy, inability to move while bedridden, requiring assistance for daily activities, while appetite remains normal. This constitutes the syndrome. Men are subject to the same principles. Those who engage in sexual activity for pleasure when newly recovered and internal deficiency-heat has not cleared will die immediately. If, after recovery, one engages in sexual activity with a virgin boy, relapse rarely occurs; even if it does, death is not necessarily the outcome.
Shanghan disease arises when individuals are exposed to Cold-Toxic Qi. Such cases do not transmit to others. However, if due to irregular seasonal climates—improper regulation of warmth and coolness—individuals contract aberrant Qi and fall ill, these cases are often contagious. Therefore, one must take preventive medicine and employ methods to guard against infection.
"Shixing Bing" (Epidemic Disease) refers to situations where spring should be warm but is cold, summer should be hot but is cool, autumn should be cool but is hot, and winter should be cold but is warm. When the climate contradicts the season, throughout the year, patients of all ages exhibit similar symptoms; this is caused by the Shixing Qi. After the Start of Spring solar term, if there is no sudden severe cold or ice/snow, yet people suffer from high fever, this belongs to Spring Yang Qi emerging during Winter, where latent Cold transforms into Wenbing (Warm Disease). From after the Spring Equinox to before the Autumn Equinox, if there is sudden cold weather, it is called Shixing Hanyi (Epidemic Cold Epidemic), also known as Shixing Shanghan. This is caused by Cold injuring people after the solar term has passed, not merely through careless exposure. If sudden cold occurs in March or April, when Yang Qi is still weak and suppressed by Cold, the resulting heat is mild. In May or June, when Yang Qi is abundant but suppressed by Cold, the heat is severe. In July or August, when Yang Qi is declining and suppressed by Cold, the heat is slight. These diseases resemble Wenbing and Shubing (Summerheat Disease), but their treatments differ.
Regarding Shixing Bing: On the first day, the pathogen is in the skin and hair follicles; apply medicated ointment and moxibustion to cure. If unresolved, on the second day, the pathogen is in the flesh; acupuncture and diaphoretic herbs should be used to induce sweating and cure. If unresolved, on the third day, the pathogen is in the muscles; induce sweating again. Profuse sweating leads to cure. If unresolved, stop further sweating induction. On the fourth day, the pathogen is in the chest; administer Licui Wan (Veratrum Pill) to induce mild vomiting for cure. If the condition is stubborn and Licui Wan fails to induce vomiting, administer Chidou Gouti San (Red Bean and Melon Seed Powder) to induce vomiting. Once vomiting resolves the condition, if residual pathogens remain, treat with acupuncture. If unresolved by the sixth day, the heat has entered the Stomach; administer Jizi Tang (Chicken Egg Decoction) to purge. Success is nearly guaranteed, provided one carefully observes the timing and condition.
Food stagnation presents similarly to Shixing Bing, with fever and headache. Food stagnation requires rapid purging; Shixing Bing requires waiting until the sixth or seventh day before purging. In early Shixing Bing, on day one the pathogen is in the skin, day two in the flesh, day three in the muscles, day four in the chest, and day five enters the Stomach; only then can purging be applied. If purging is applied while heat is outside the Stomach, the heat enters the deficient Stomach. Ultimately, purging is still required. If purging is not performed, residual heat in the Stomach causes tissue decay; mortality is nine out of ten. If untreated, Stomach deficiency allows heat to enter and rot the tissue. Mild cases present with red macules (mortality five out of ten); severe cases present with black macules (mortality nine out of ten). Outcomes depend on the relative strength of the patient's constitution.
If a patient has no fever but exhibits delirium, restlessness, and incoherent speech/disconnection from reality, do not use fire therapy. Instead, administer Zhuling San (Polyporus Powder), one cun cube, mixed with water. Force the patient to drink one sheng (approx. 200ml) of fresh well water; up to two sheng is better. Stimulate the throat with a finger to induce vomiting; recovery follows immediately. Failure to induce vomiting promptly usually results in non-recovery; do not use other medicines. Disconnection from reality indicates critical danger. Failure to resolve this via Zhuling San vomiting leads to rapid death. Acupuncture may be used beforehand for better results. Delayed purging prevents heat evacuation, leading to Stomach decay. Methods for decoction, warming, acupuncture, and stone therapy have separate standard formulas. Tonification, nourishment, and guidance exercises are appended below.
The *Yangsheng Fang · Daoyin Fa* states: Upon waking in the morning, use both hands to alternately grasp and pull the ears upward from the top of the head, and draw the sideburns. This promotes facial Qi and Blood circulation, preventing white hair and deafness.
Additionally, rub palms until hot, then massage the face up and down seven times. This removes turbid Qi and gives the face a luster.
Additionally, rub hands until hot, then massage the body from top to bottom. This is called "Dry Bathing." It enables resistance to Wind-Cold and Shixing Qi, curing chills, fever, headache, and various ailments.
