The *Suwen: Treatise on the Heavenly Origin of Vital Qi* states: "If one engages in strenuous sexual activity, the Kidney Qi will be damaged, and the High Bone will deteriorate." It also states: "If the taste is excessively salty, the Qi of the Great Bone will be exhausted, the muscles will become short and contracted, and the Heart Qi will be suppressed." Wang Bing commented: "The High Bone refers to the prominent bone of the lower back." Yu Jiayan stated: "The Great Bone is the same as the High Bone. There are often high monks who have abstained from desire, but due to an excessively salty diet, their essence leaks and disintegrates, ruining their previous efforts. I believe both explanations are incorrect. The High Bone is the transverse bone at the pubic symphysis (the area of pubic hair), not the prominent bone of the lumbar region. What prominent bone exists in the waist? 'Strenuous activity' refers to vigorous intercourse with excessive frequency. This bone is connected by the meridians of the Liver and Kidney. Excessive intercourse not only damages the Qi of the five internal organs but also causes the High Bone, which is linked to the exterior meridians, to deteriorate. Many individuals who engage in frequent intercourse and forceful ejaculation experience a dull, sour pain in the transverse bone at the pubic region; this is a sign. The *Xi Yuan Lu* refutes the folk belief that women who remain chaste and faithful have white pelvic bones, while those who are promiscuous have black ones. This is incorrect. All virgins and women who have not given birth have white bones; those who have given birth many times have black bones. This has nothing to do with chastity or promiscuity. If multiple births can cause deterioration of a woman's bones, why could it not be inferred that excessive intercourse causes bone deterioration in men? This bone is connected to the Liver and Kidney, formed by the convergence of large tendons, and horizontally binds the Lower Jiao. If it deteriorates, the tendons become lax and lose their binding function, leading to the risk of uncontrolled leakage of the Qi of the five zang organs, the fluids of the Bladder, and the essence of the Kidneys! How could such a person still expect longevity?
The Great Bone generally refers to the vertebral column, arm bones, elbow bones, patella, and other bones throughout the body. 'Qi exhaustion' here implies that salty flavors enter the bones; when there are bone diseases, one should not consume excessive salt. When salty flavor enters the bones, body fluids become stagnant and viscous, causing the bones to lose nourishment. The heat within the bone qi burns fiercely, hence it is called 'exhaustion.' When people consume salt, they feel thirsty because blood and juices become viscous, and the marrow fails to receive proper nourishment; thus, their feeling of fatigue and vexation is indeed appropriate. So, are the High Bone and the Great Bone one or two distinct entities? Deterioration of the High Bone results from insecure essence, manifesting as deficiency consumptive diseases. Exhaustion of the Great Bone involves heat evaporating from within the bones, leading to sores, carbuncles, flaccidity, and bi-syndrome, and even severe emaciation.
