The syndrome of nocturnal emission is commonly suffered by six or seven out of ten people. Those afflicted with this disease are often as debilitated as invalids. The Kidney cannot be purged but should be tonified; how can it be allowed to leak essence spontaneously throughout the day? This disease must be cured promptly and not neglected due to procrastination, lest it result in a lifelong incurable deficiency (liang zhi). However, the syndrome is divided into Yin deficiency and Yang deficiency, which must be distinguished. Without knowing Yin and Yang, reckless treatment often yields little effect.
In cases of Yang deficiency, Qi is necessarily weak, and impotence is frequently observed. Upon seeing a woman, vitality collapses; yet once in a dream, the essence surges forward relentlessly. Initially, there must have been visual stimulation leading to longing for her appearance, where the body could not restrain itself, and the Hun (ethereal soul) wandered with the dream, thus forming this syndrome. If at that time astringent and Yang-tonifying medicines were used immediately, success would be easy. Alas, people consider it merely a dream and think it nothing to worry about. Repeatedly, from twice to three times, up to four or five times, until the Jade Gate (Yuguan, referring to the seminal gate) fails to close. I now transmit a prescription that is simplest and easiest: one dose brings relief, three doses bring complete cure. It is a miraculous and inconceivable formula. If taken at the onset, one dose prevents recurrence forever. If one adjusts my formula into pills and takes one liang daily, miraculous results will also be achieved. Scholars should revere me as their lifesaving deity.
As for Yin deficiency nocturnal emission, it differs significantly. Often, emissions occur at night without any conscious sexual thoughts. This is due to innate constitutional weakness compounded by excessive sexual indulgence, or imitating scenes from erotic pictures, or seeking spiritual pleasure in reading unorthodox histories, or indulging in romantic pleasures, causing the Jade Gate to remain open. Seeing a woman causes fluid discharge, hearing sounds causes emission, touching skin causes leakage. The patient groans all day with no healthy complexion. One must greatly tonify True Yuan and assist the Fire of the Mingmen (Gate of Life) to restore the illumination of Yang (Sunlight), dispel the demons of Yin, close the gate, and increase Jing (essence). Without forcibly stopping it, the essence will stop naturally. The prescription is named Zhuangyang Zhijing Tang (Cordyceps and Acanthopanax Decoction for Strengthening Yang and Stopping Emission). Although named for strengthening Yang, it actually tonifies Kidney Water. It uses Ba Ji Tian (Morinda officinalis) to warm the Fire of the Mingmen, ensuring sufficient Water to mutually support each other, so that Jing is retained within the Kidney Palace and does not leak externally. This is precisely how stopping essence is achieved by not directly stopping it. If one merely uses astringents like Mu Li (Oyster Shell) or Jin Ying Zi (Cherokee Rose Fruit) to stop the essence without tonifying the Water and Fire within the Kidney, I see only their gradual depletion day after day.
