Diarrhea, characterized by the sudden and profuse expulsion of intestinal contents, is a most terrifying disease. If treatment is delayed even slightly, it will inevitably lead to the exhaustion of Qi and death. However, diarrhea must be urgently differentiated into Yin and Yang syndromes.
For instance, in severe cases where diarrhea occurs fifty or sixty times, or even over a hundred or several hundred times per day, with pure watery stools and undigested food (Wan Gu Bu Hua), people often assume it is a Cold syndrome. Yet, there are also Heat syndromes within this presentation. In a Cold syndrome diarrhea, the heart and abdomen do not hurt, and there is no sense of heaviness or tenesmus (Hou Zhong) in the large intestine. Conversely, in a Heat syndrome diarrhea, there is invariably abdominal pain that cannot be pressed upon, accompanied by the distress of tenesmus. If one fails to distinguish clearly before administering medication, the patient will surely die upon swallowing the medicine. I now transmit two prescriptions: one for treating Yin syndromes and one for Yang syndromes.
For Yang syndromes, Qianqian (Plantaginis Semen) and Fuling (Poria) are used, as they are potent diuretic herbs, while Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) strengthens the Spleen and removes dampness. Adding Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) utilizes its aromatic nature to guide the medicinal qi into the Bladder, working synergistically with Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma). This naturally stabilizes chaos and rescues critical conditions, turning disaster into fortune. Why is it necessary to use Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) to rescue a collapsing state? For wealthy patients, it is advisable to add five qian or one liang of Renshen. However, the prescription I transmit excludes Renshen to assist impoverished patients. This prescription is named Dao Shui Zhi Liu Tang (Water-Guiding Flow-Stopping Decoction).
Treating Yin syndrome diarrhea is different. Although this formula can sometimes be applied universally, one must not rigidly adhere to it for all cases. Therefore, another prescription is transmitted, named Fu Huo Xiao Shui Tang (Fire-Supporting Water-Dissolving Decoction). The subtlety of these two formulas lies in their distinct intentions: the former (Dao Shui Zhi Liu Tang) drains water without depleting Qi, while the latter (Fu Huo Xiao Shui Tang) tonifies Fire (Yang) to cultivate Qi.

Malaria (Nue Ji) originates from external Wind pathogens. However, if there is no Phlegm (Tan) and Food Stagnation (Shi) internally, malaria cannot ultimately form. Although it is said that "no Phlegm, no Malaria" and "no Food Stagnation, no Malaria," even when infected by external Wind, it requires the insufficiency of internal Yin and Yang Qi for these three factors to combine and create Malaria. Thus, how can one fail to differentiate Yin and Yang?
If it is a Yang syndrome Malaria, it invariably occurs during the day, either daily or every other day. There is more chills than fever. Although the manifestation seems vigorous, the condition is actually mild because Yang Qi can battle the pathogenic factor, resulting in shivering and audible teeth chattering. If it is a Yin syndrome Malaria, it may occur daily, every other day, or every third day. However, at onset, it invariably occurs at night, with less chills and more fever. The teeth do not chatter, body pain is not severe, and thirst is not extreme. These symptoms appear mild but are actually severe. Although both syndromes result from pathogenic invasion, the treatment method should not solely focus on expelling the pathogen. Tonifying the Righteous Qi (Zheng Qi) alone can cure Malaria; there is originally no need to devise separate plans for expelling pathogens. Nevertheless, it is acceptable to include a small amount of pathogen-dispersing herbs within the process of tonifying righteousness. If applied correctly, the disease will vanish like a sweep. I now establish two prescriptions: one for Yang Malaria and one for Yin Malaria.
The Yang Malaria prescription is named Fu Yang San Xie Dan (Yang-Supporting Pathogen-Dispersing Pill). One dose alleviates, two doses cure completely; three doses are unnecessary. For any Yang Malaria, whether daily or bi-daily, complete recovery is guaranteed; this is a miraculous formula. The Yin Malaria prescription is named Yi Yin Pi Xie Dan (Yin-Nourishing Pathogen-Repelling Pill). Regardless of whether it is daily, bi-daily, or tri-daily, four doses ensure complete recovery. For quartan malaria (occurring every fourth day) or irregular patterns persisting for years, increase the dosage of the ingredients in the formula and add five qian of Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma); four doses will still ensure complete recovery. After recovery, one must consume many doses of Shiquan Dabu Tang (Complete Great Tonifying Decoction) to prevent relapse due to re-infection. If one does not believe my words and employs only pathogen-expelling drugs, ignoring both Yang and Yin Qi, although the intention is to remove Malaria, one is essentially fortifying the fortress of the Malaria demon.
