How can childbirth (parturition) be distinguished by Yin and Yang? Yin deficiency leads to inability to give birth, just as Yang deficiency also leads to inability to give birth. Then how can one distinguish whether the deficiency is of Yin or Yang? In cases of Yang deficiency, Qi deficiency causes sinking, and amniotic fluid inevitably dries up. Often, the fetus attempts to deliver before its head has turned. If hands or feet appear first, this is a critical condition; even using acupuncture needles on the fetal limbs is not the most appropriate treatment. One must use large doses of Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) and Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) to replenish Qi sufficiently, allowing the fetal body to turn naturally. One should not merely see the dryness of amniotic fluid and blindly use drugs that promote abortion or moisten fluids to lubricate. The formula used is Jiu Tai Liang Quan San (Rescue Fetus Complete Powder). After one dose, the fetal body moves actively; after two doses, the fetal head reaches the cervix, resulting in immediate delivery. This is because Ren Shen and Huang Qi are purely Qi-tonifying herbs; their combined use shows miraculous effects. Moreover, with each herb used in high doses of two liang, Qi is generated from the void, the mother becomes strong, and the fetus naturally does not weaken. Strength naturally exceeds the ordinary, and turning is very fast. Especially wonderful is the addition of three fen of Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) to slightly lift stagnant Qi. With Qi un-stagnated, childbirth becomes even more miraculous.
In cases where Yin deficiency causes inability to give birth, how can it be distinguished? The fetal head has already reached the cervix, but the jiao gu (pubic symphysis) does not open, so amniotic fluid cannot push, leading to this situation. Unless one greatly tonifies the water (Yin fluids), how can pushing be facilitated? The formula used is Shun Tui San (Smooth Pushing Powder). After one dose, the pubic symphysis makes a loud sound, and the fetal head emerges for birth. However, if the fetal head has not yet reached the cervix, Zha Mu Zhi (Quercus variabilis Branch) must absolutely not be added to lightly open the passage. Remember! Remember! Because Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) are divine products for blood tonification, and Zha Mu Zhi is a sacred medicine for opening passages; they naturally combine to succeed. If these are abandoned and one vainly uses Cu Sheng Tu Nao Dan (Rabbit Brain Parturition Pill), it will likely lead only to failure and death.

Xiao Chan (spontaneous abortion/miscarriage) is mostly due to deficiency of both Yin and Yang, compounded by excessive sexual indulgence, leading to restless fetus and insecurity. Any slight touch may cause expulsion. Therefore, if one does not urgently tonify Yin and Yang Qi and Blood, how can the fetus be secured? But how can symptoms of Yang decline be identified? The woman will necessarily feel sleepy and lazy to get out of bed. If she experiences any fatigue from daily activities, she will feel vexation, dizziness, and loss of appetite. These are signs of Yang deficiency. The formula used is An Tai Shang Sheng Tang (Supreme Holy Fetus-Calming Decoction). After one dose, the fetus calms; after two doses, there is no movement. Taking more is especially good, though ten doses are not necessary. In cases of movement due to Yin deficiency, the person is necessarily emaciated, or feels hot at night and cold during the day, or sweats at night but not during the day, with scorched skin, bone heat, and occasional coughing. These are signs of Yin deficiency. The formula used is Yang Yin An Tai Tang (Nourish Yin Fetus-Calming Decoction). This formula specifically treats deficiency of Yin water, with a slight addition of Yang-tonifying herbs. The previous formula (An Tai Shang Sheng Tang) was purely Yang-tonifying with slight Yin-nourishing elements. The goal is to ensure neither Yin nor Yang dominates excessively, harmonizing them appropriately without error. The latter formula (Yang Yin An Tai Tang) generally requires four doses for natural fetal security. If willing to take more, it is even better; follow the patient's wish, and the physician need not force it.
