The vision scatters; when vision scatters, diplopia (double vision) occurs, hence the perception of two objects. This statement is not yet a definitive conclusion. The treatment method must greatly tonify Liver Qi (Liver energy), enabling the Liver to adequately respond to the Brain. When Liver Qi is sufficient, Brain Qi will also be sufficient. The formula used is Zhugan Yinao Tang (Assist Liver and Benefit Brain Decoction): Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, 2 liang), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 1 liang), Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 3 qian), Yuliren (Semen Pruni Armeniacae Amarum, 2 qian), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, 5 fen), Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis, 2 qian), Xixin (Herba Asari, 5 fen), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, 3 qian), Ganhua Ju (Flos Chrysanthemi Indici, 5 qian), Bohe (Herba Menthae Haplocalycis, 8 fen), Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 5 qian), Tiandong (Herba Asparagi, 3 qian), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, 1 qian), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae, 3 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, vision merges into one; after two doses, full recovery is achieved.
This formula consists entirely of herbs that benefit the Liver, not those that benefit the Brain. It is unknown that benefiting the Brain requires adding Essence (Jing), and adding Essence requires nourishing the Kidney. However, nourishing the Kidney to benefit the Brain does not quickly supplement Liver Qi. It is more appropriate to directly tonify the Liver and assist with herbs that dispel pathogenic factors. Since Brain Qi is insufficient, pathogens can reside there; without dispelling pathogens, merely tonifying Essence in the Brain is indeed unhelpful. Treating the Liver is precisely how one benefits the Brain. This condition can also be treated with Butongshen Dan (Tonify Pupil Spirit Pill): Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (each 1 liang), Yuliren (Semen Pruni Armeniacae Amarum), Hei Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae Preparata), Danpi (Cortex Moutan) (each 3 qian), Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Weirui (Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati) (each 5 qian), Xixin (Herba Asari, 5 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. Two doses result in cure.
Some patients, after suffering from eye disease, frequently see birds and insects flying before their eyes; upon attempting to catch them, nothing is found. People consider this strange, but do not realize it is not strange; rather, it is due to Blood deficiency in the Liver and Gallbladder, with Phlegm (Phlegm turbidity) causing obstruction. The Liver and Gallbladder belong to Wood. If there is no Blood to moisten the Wood, the Wood Qi becomes excessively dry. Internal dryness must draw moisture from the exterior. However, the Liver and Gallbladder prefer internal moisture for nourishment and dislike external moisture for support. Consequently, external moisture fails to transform into Blood and instead transforms into Phlegm. Blood nourishing the Liver and Gallbladder is beneficial, whereas Phlegm invading them is harmful. Moreover, Blood can enter the interior of the Liver and Gallbladder, but Phlegm finds it difficult to penetrate inside. Since Phlegm remains outside, it obstructs the orifices of the Liver and Gallbladder, preventing Qi from flowing freely. The visual hallucination of flying birds and insects is all caused by the mischief of Phlegm. The treatment method should tonify the Blood of the Liver and Gallbladder while simultaneously resolving the externally obstructing Phlegm. The formula used is Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) with modifications: Shudi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 3 qian), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, 5 qian), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 1 liang), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, 2 qian), Suanzaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae, 5 qian), Qingxiangzi (Semen Celsiae, 3 qian), Fushen (Poria Cum Radix Pinelli, 3 qian), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 1 qian), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, 1 qian), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata, 3 qian), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 2 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After four doses, the visual hallucinations cease.
This formula uses Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) to nourish the Liver and Gallbladder, and uses Fuling (Poria), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata), and Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) to resolve damp-Phlegm. The addition of Suanzaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae) and Qingxiangzi (Semen Celsiae) is because Qingxiangzi (Semen Celsiae) targets the meridians connecting to the eyes, and Suanzaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae) removes mental confusion. When Heart Qi is clear, Phlegm is easily expelled; when the ocular meridians are bright, pathogens naturally dissipate. However, using only these two herbs without combining them with the previous ingredients would fail to achieve a decisive victory through unconventional means.
Using Xiangrong Tang (Prosperity Decoction) for this condition is also excellent. Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) (each 1 liang), Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis, 5 qian), Baijiezi (Semen Mustardae), Fuling (Poria) (each 3 qian), Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae, 1 qian), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, 5 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. Ten doses result in full recovery.
After some patients suffer from eye pain, the whites of both eyes turn completely black. There is no pain, yet vision remains normal. Hair stands stiffly like iron rods, the person appears dazed as if drunk, speaking and acting not at all. People consider this a symptom of rebellious Blood (Blood stagnation rising), but who knows it is actually Kidney Pathogens attacking the Heart? The Heart belongs to Fire, and the Kidney belongs to Water. These two meridians seem to overcome each other, yet Heart Fire cannot thrive without Kidney Water. If Kidney Water does not ascend to communicate with the Heart, the Heart will inevitably suffer from restlessness. Although Kidney Water can only assist the Heart, it should not overly bully it. When Kidney Qi attacks the Heart, it originally intends to save the Heart from dryness; however, if there is pathological Water in the Kidneys, it carries this along to "nourish" the Heart, thereby injuring it. When the Heart is injured by Kidney Pathogens, it is essentially a fatal condition, yet the patient does not die but instead presents with blackness in the eyes. This is because the Kidney comes to rescue the Heart, not to attack it. The Heart fears the Kidney Pathogen but dares not openly expose the Kidney's fault. The whites turning black, making red and white indistinguishable, and hair standing erect are signs of extreme anger/dread. The dazed, drunken appearance, silence, and inaction are signs of being overly constrained, leaving no recourse. The treatment method should break through barriers directly, urgently saving the Heart Monarch from peril, and expelling and cleansing Kidney Pathogens to restore order. The formula used is Zhuanzhi Tang (Transform and Treat Decoction): Fuling (Poria, 5 qian), Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 5 qian), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, 2 qian), Wulingzhi Mo (Endothelium Corneum Gigeriae Galli Pulveratum, 2 qian), Changpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii, 1 qian), Baijiezi (Semen Mustardae, 3 qian), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 5 qian), Liangjiang (Rhizoma Alpiniae Offinarum, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, the dazed state clears; after two doses, hair softens; after three doses, blackness resolves; after four doses, full recovery is achieved.
Pathogens in the Kidney are merely Cold-Dampness Qi. Using acrid, warm, and drying agents naturally facilitates the expulsion of pathogens. Furthermore, assisted by generals who breach gates (potent herbs) and guides who lead the way (meridian-guiding herbs), is it not possible to restore health in an instant and quell chaos immediately?
Using Lishui Yixin Dan (Benefit Heart and Promote Water Elimination Pill) for this condition is also good. Fuling (Poria), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Yiren (Semen Coicis), Bajitian (Radix Morindae Officinalis) (each 5 qian), Baijiezi (Semen Mustardae), Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi) (each 3 qian), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 1 liang). Decoct in water and take orally. Four doses result in full recovery.
Some patients experience amenorrhea (menstrual obstruction). Suddenly, after three months, the eyes become red and swollen, with pain like needle pricks. People believe this is due to Blood deficiency failing to nourish the eyes, but who knows it is actually Blood obstruction causing eye pain? Amenorrhea seems to be a symptom of Blood exhaustion; however, if Blood is excessively abundant, Liver Qi becomes blocked and stagnant. Since menstruation does not flow, Heat has no outlet to vent downward and instead accumulates upward. Since the orifice of the Liver opens to the eyes, the Heat travels to the Liver and causes eye pain. In such cases, the Liver pulse must be large and forceful, or wiry and slippery, certainly not fine, choppy, faint, slow, or weak. The treatment method should not tonify Blood to aid Heat, but should unblock menstruation to drain Liver Fire. The formula used is Kaiyong Tang (Open Obstruction Decoction): Honghua (Flos Carthami Tinctorii, 3 qian), Dangguiwei (Cauda Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 3 qian), Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae, 2 qian), Taoren (Semen Persicae, 14 pieces), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, 2 qian), Danpi (Cortex Moutan, 3 qian), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 1 qian), Xiangfu (Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi, 1 qian), Yujin (Rhizoma Curcumae Longae, 3 qian), Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis, 2 qian), Yuanhusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis Yanhusuo, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, menstruation flows; after another dose, the eyes heal.
This formula does not treat the eyes directly but focuses on unblocking menstruation. Once menstruation flows, Heat dissipates; once Heat dissipates, the eyes settle.
This condition can also be treated with Xieyong Dan (Drain Obstruction Pill): Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 1 liang), Honghua (Flos Carthami Tinctorii, 5 qian), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 2 qian), Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 5 qian), Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae, 3 qian), Taoren (Semen Persicae, 10 grains), Danpi (Cortex Moutan, 3 qian), Chao Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae Jasminoidis Stir-fried, 2 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, Blood flows; after two doses, eye swelling completely subsides; a third dose is unnecessary.
