A newborn infant, within three days after birth, presents with short and scanty urine (scanty urination), a yellow nasal tip, slight bluish discoloration at the corners of the mouth, sneezing accompanied by abdominal borborygmus (rumbling in the abdomen), weak suckling during breastfeeding, and incessant crying. In severe cases, convulsions (spasms) and fever may occur; this is a manifestation of Umbilical Wind (neonatal tetanus). Immediately administer the following decoction:
Prepared Rhubarb (1 qian 2 fen), Tongcao (1 qian), Lindera Root (1 qian), Aucklandia Root (5 fen), Aurantium Fruit (5 fen), Areca Seed (5 fen), Cicada Slough Tail (5 fen), Uncaria Ramulus cum Uncis (1 qian), Mint Herb (3 fen). Use Fermented Soybean (30 grains) as the guide drug.
If administered for the first time within three days after birth, add Bitter Orange Tuber (3-4 fen) and Curcuma Zedoaria Rhizome (3-4 fen), removing Areca Seed and Aurantium Fruit. For subsequent applications or doses, continue using Areca Seed and Aurantium Fruit, but remove Bitter Orange Tuber and Curcuma Zedoaria Rhizome.
If fever occurs, add Saposhnikovia Root (1 qian) and Tangerine Peel (5 fen).
If convulsions occur, add Bombyx Batryticatus (1 qian); select straight, high-quality specimens.
Within six days, to prevent Lockthroat Wind (acute laryngitis), add Licorice Root (5 fen) and Platycodon Root (1 qian).
If vomiting and regurgitation occur, add Agastache Herb (1 qian) and Amomum Fruit (4-5 fen). (Note: Amomum Fruit is hot in nature and should not be used in infants with fetal heat.)
If the infant’s face is deep red and lips are dry, add Forsythia Fruit (1 qian); if symptoms are heavier, also add Coptis Rhizome (3-4 fen).
If the infant’s face is yellowish, indicating damp-heat, add Yinchen Artemisia Herba (1 qian) and Atractylodes Rhizome (1 qian).
If, after taking the previous prescription, bowel movements remain unobstructed, add Raw Rhubarb (1 qian) and remove Prepared Rhubarb.
If urination remains obstructed, add Plantago Seed (5 fen).
If hiccups occur, add Clove (3-4 fen). (Note: Clove is hot in nature and should not be used excessively.)
If an infant within the first month has no other symptoms but cries incessantly, this is considered Pan Chang Qi Pain (intestinal colic/spasm). Use Lindera Root (1 qian), Areca Seed (5 fen), Aucklandia Root (8 fen), Aurantium Fruit (5 fen), Cyperus Rhizome (5 fen); for severe cases, add Agarwood (4-5 fen).
For an infant within the first month, boil Mint Herb in water, soak a new green woven cloth in it, and use it to wipe the inside of the mouth to remove saliva and phlegm, two to three times daily, to prevent Ma Ya (epithelial pearls).
For any newborn whose umbilical cord has not yet fallen off, do not easily uncover or inspect it.
Generally, if an infant has a deep purple complexion and dry lips, it indicates Fetal Heat; if the face is pale, it indicates Fetal Cold. Careful observation is required.
Appendix: Divine Prescription for Treating Sha Syndrome (particularly effective for Jiao Chang Sha [abdominal cramping sha] accompanied by calf muscle spasms/cramps).
Alum (1 qian), Realgar (1 qian), Cinnabar (1 qian), Moschus (9 fen), Shen Jin Paper (10 sheets), Saltpeter/Niter (1 qian).
Take the above six ingredients. First, grind Alum, Realgar, and Niter together into a fine powder. Mix with ginger juice, spread out, and dry. Then, grind Cinnabar finely, sprinkle the Shen Jin paper ash over it, and grind evenly. Finally, add Moschus, and mix thoroughly with the previously dried powder of the three minerals. Grind together briefly. Store primarily in a porcelain jar. To apply, dot the inner canthus of the left eye for males and the right eye for females. Contraindicated in pregnant women.
Before applying the talisman, chant the divine incantation three times. Cut a strip of yellow paper. Using a new brush dipped in cinnabar ink, write a character " " in the center of the paper, and a character "Ma" (Horse) at the top. Write them sequentially in a circular pattern without rushing or being sloppy. After writing, burn the talisman to ash, dissolve the ash in warm water, and have the pregnant woman drink it. This ensures safe delivery and protects the fetus. Furthermore, after writing the "Ma" character in a circle, count the number of strokes/loops: odd numbers indicate a male baby, even numbers indicate a female baby. This talisman has proven effective repeatedly. It is appended to the end of the volume to disseminate its use, serving as an aid to preserving life.
