The intermediate movement (Zhong Yun) of the guest qi governs the climate of one year, while the superior qi (Si Tian) and inferior qi (Zai Quan) of the guest qi govern the climate of half a year. When the qi (guest qi) generates the intermediate movement, it is called Shun Hua (Smooth Transformation); when the movement (intermediate qi) is controlled by the qi (guest qi), it is called Tian Xing (Heavenly Punishment). When the movement (intermediate qi) generates the heavenly qi (guest qi), it is called Xiao Ni (Minor Reversal); when the movement (intermediate qi) controls the Si Tian (guest qi), it is called Bu He (Disunion) and Qian (Fault). When the qi and movement are identical, it is called Tian Fu Sui (Heavenly符 Year); refer to Tian Fu and Sui Hui for details.
[Annotation] The first movement of the guest qi is the same as the intermediate movement that governs the entire year. As stated in the classics: "In years of Jia and Ji, Earth movement governs," which refers to this principle. The third and sixth stages of the Si Tian (superior qi) of the guest qi govern the first half of the year; the Zai Quan (inferior qi) governs the second half of the year. As stated in the classics: "Before the middle of the year, Heavenly Qi governs; after the middle of the year, Earthly Qi governs," which refers to this principle. In the sixty-year cycle, the interaction between Heaven's Qi and Earth's Movement involves either harmony (Xiang De) or disharmony (Bu Xiang De). "Qi generating Intermediate Movement" means Si Tian generates the Intermediate Movement. For example, in Gui Si and Gui Hai years, Wood generates Fire; in Jia Zi, Jia Wu, Jia Yin, and Jia Shen years, Fire generates Earth; in Yi Chou and Yi Wei years, Earth generates Metal; in Xin Mao and Xin You years, Metal generates Water; in Ren Chen and Ren Xu years, Water generates Wood. Among the sixty years, there are twelve such years where Heavenly Qi generates the Movement, with the upper generating the lower, hence named Shun Hua (Smooth Transformation), representing harmonious years. "Movement being controlled by Qi" means Si Tian controls the Intermediate Movement. For example, in Ji Si and Ji Hai years, Wood controls Earth; in Xin Chou and Xin Wei years, Earth controls Water; in Wu Chen and Wu Xu years, Water controls Fire; in Geng Zi, Geng Wu, Geng Yin, and Geng Shen years, Fire controls Metal; in Ding Mao and Ding You years, Metal controls Wood. Among the sixty years, there are twelve such years where Heavenly Qi controls the Movement, with the upper controlling the lower, hence named Tian Xing (Heavenly Punishment), representing disharmonious years. "Movement generating Heavenly Qi" means the Intermediate Movement generates Si Tian. For example, in Yi Chou and Yi Wei years, Fire generates Earth; in Ren Zi, Ren Wu, Ren Yin, and Ren Shen years, Wood generates Fire; in Xin Si and Xin Hai years, Water generates Wood; in Geng Chen and Geng Xu years, Metal generates Water; in Ji Mao and Ji You years, Earth generates Metal. Among the sixty years, there are twelve such years where the Movement generates Heavenly Qi, with the lower generating the upper. Although it is a case of generation, since the child is above the mother, it is called Xiao Ni (Minor Reversal) and indicates minor illnesses. "Movement controlling Si Tian" means the Intermediate Movement controls Si Tian. For example, in Yi Si and Yi Hai years, Metal controls Wood; in Bing Zi, Bing Wu, Bing Yin, and Bing Shen years, Water controls Fire; in Ding Chou and Ding Wei years, Wood controls Earth; in Gui Mao and Gui You years, Fire controls Metal; in Jia Chen and Jia Xu years, Earth controls Water. Among the sixty years, there are twelve such years where the Movement controls Heavenly Qi, with the lower controlling the upper, hence named Bu He (Disunion), also representing disharmony and indicating severe illnesses. "Qi and Movement are identical": for instance, both are Wood in Ding Si and Ding Hai years; both are Fire in Wu Zi, Wu Wu, Wu Yin, and Wu Shen years; both are Earth in Ji Chou and Ji Wei years; both are Metal in Yi Mao and Yi You years; both are Water in Bing Chen and Bing Xu years. Among the sixty years, there are twelve such years where Qi and Movement are identical, all classified as Tian Fu (Heavenly符). Although they share the same Qi, there may still be excessive dominance and harm. Years such as Tai Yi Tian Fu and Sui Hui are detailed separately later.
