(Wang Tao's *Waitai Miyao* records: Treating manic-depressive illness where phlegm confounds the heart orifice.)
Xionghuang (Realgar), Cixiong (Orpiment), Bingpian (Borneol), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) (each 5 fen), Renyan (Arsenic Trioxide, 4 fen), Sheng Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus, raw, 20 fruits), Jixingzi (Speranskiae Semen, 1 qian), Sheng Lv dou (Phaseoli Volubilis Semen, raw, 180 grains). First, wash the green beans with cold water to remove their skins, then dry them in the sun along with the other raw herbs and grind into a fine powder. Adults take 7 fen; those aged fifteen or sixteen take 4 fen. It can be mixed into flour noodles or cakes for the patient to eat. Ideally, after a short while, the stubborn phlegm will be vomited out. In the evening, nourish the body with thin rice gruel.
Pili San treats manic-depressive illness by inducing vomiting of wind-phlegm to drain turbid yin. (*Neijing* classifies dian disease into bone, tendon, and vessel types; *Nanjing* states "excessive yin leads to dian." This is clearly an internal organ pathology, mostly caused by wind-phlegm from the Liver channel reversing upward to the Heart, confusing the spirit. Therefore, it is appropriate to use emesis to break through the yin pathogenic qi.) The formula rhyme goes: "Cixiong Xihuang Bing Jixing, Renyan Lv dou Shanzhi xun." (Heavy use of Green Bean and Gardenia Fruit is to resolve arsenic toxicity.) If vomiting does not occur, swallow cakes to stimulate the Yangming stomach qi to ascend. (Although the formula uses Green Bean to resolve Renyan toxicity, if ingestion leads to internal attack of toxicity without vomiting, food such as flour cakes must be used to stimulate stomach qi, ensuring vomiting occurs. Gardenia Fruit is light and ascending; Speranskiae Semen directs qi downward and penetrates bones; Realgar enters the yang aspect of the Liver, killing essence and dispelling evil; Orpiment enters the yin aspect of the Liver, expelling wind and killing parasites; Calculus Bovis enters the Liver, guiding wind outward; Borneol enters the marrow, searching out wind until it is exhausted; Arsenic Trioxide is drying, acrid, and aggressive in resolving phlegm, good at inducing vomiting. As a fierce toxic drug, it penetrates everywhere. Even firmly bound stubborn phlegm will surely be vomited up via the stomach, allowing the spirit to return to its residence and become clear.)
(Xu Shuwei's *Puji Ben shi Fang* cites Sun Zhao's formula) Treats sudden collapse due to wind-stroke, with excessive phlegm-saliva and blocked qi mechanism. First open the orifices to induce slight vomiting of thin saliva, then administer other medicines subsequently. Also treats throat wind with locked jaw.
Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus, four pods, remove skin and strings, roasted), Baifan (Alumen, 1 liang). Grind together into a powder, mix with warm water and take 5 fen. Alternatively, add Licui (Veratrum Rhizome).
